CHAPTER 10<br />

Def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g C<strong>and</strong>idate Data,<br />

Services, <strong>and</strong> Processes<br />

for the <strong>Cloud</strong>s<br />

Chapter 10<br />

When there’s snow on the ground, I like to<br />

pretend I’m walk<strong>in</strong>g on clouds.<br />

—Takayuki Ikkaku, Arisa Hosaka,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Toshihiro Kawabata<br />

Animal Cross<strong>in</strong>g: Wild World, 2005<br />

Now we’re cook<strong>in</strong>g. We have an <strong>in</strong>formation, service,<br />

process, <strong>and</strong> governance underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of our problem<br />

doma<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> we underst<strong>and</strong> how to approach test<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Now it is time to identify the data, services, <strong>and</strong> processes<br />

that are good c<strong>and</strong>idates for cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g. In the<br />

next chapter, we move them out there as well as def<strong>in</strong>e<br />

the end-state architecture <strong>and</strong> how to extend our <strong>SOA</strong><br />

out to the clouds.<br />

Keep <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d that we are do<strong>in</strong>g a bit of a distributed<br />

comput<strong>in</strong>g balanc<strong>in</strong>g act now, deploy<strong>in</strong>g services, processes,<br />

<strong>and</strong> data on platforms that make the most sense,<br />

<strong>and</strong> we are do<strong>in</strong>g so <strong>in</strong> the context of <strong>SOA</strong>. What we are<br />

def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g here is a mere <strong>in</strong>stance of the architecture, <strong>and</strong> if<br />

it is def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> deployed correctly, we should be able to<br />

move our services, processes, <strong>and</strong> data between onpremise<br />

<strong>and</strong> cloud-based systems without a great deal of<br />

difficulty.<br />

The way to get <strong>SOA</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g architecture<br />

right, right out of the gate, is to identify those services,<br />

processes, <strong>and</strong> data that are good c<strong>and</strong>idates for cloud<br />

comput<strong>in</strong>g. Once those services are <strong>in</strong> the clouds, we are<br />

likely not to relocate them anytime soon. Moreover, we<br />
