78 Chapter 4 Mak<strong>in</strong>g the Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Case for <strong>Cloud</strong>s<br />

<strong>Step</strong> 6: Def<strong>in</strong>e Hard Benefits<br />

In this step, we def<strong>in</strong>e the hard benefits <strong>in</strong> terms of direct <strong>and</strong> visible cost reduction<br />

<strong>and</strong>/or bus<strong>in</strong>ess efficiencies that are corrected. Refer to the list <strong>in</strong><br />

step 5 as a jump<strong>in</strong>g-off po<strong>in</strong>t to itemize <strong>and</strong> place dollar values next to the<br />

list of hard benefits, cost sav<strong>in</strong>gs, or revenue-produc<strong>in</strong>g items that are easy to<br />

underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> quantify. The amount of money you place next to each benefit<br />

should have some detailed analysis around it.<br />

For <strong>in</strong>stance, when consider<strong>in</strong>g the value of preserv<strong>in</strong>g capital, you<br />

should use the analysis <strong>and</strong> concepts outl<strong>in</strong>ed earlier <strong>in</strong> this chapter. However,<br />

make sure to localize the analysis with<strong>in</strong> your bus<strong>in</strong>ess to make the po<strong>in</strong>t:<br />

What does this hard benefit mean to your bus<strong>in</strong>ess And list the numbers beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

the hard benefits.<br />

<strong>Step</strong> 7: Def<strong>in</strong>e Soft Benefits<br />

Soft benefits are those value po<strong>in</strong>ts that are difficult to quantify but are benefits<br />

nonetheless—for example, the value of better customer satisfaction (the<br />

value that customers see from better IT support of bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes they<br />

participate <strong>in</strong>) or the value of better employee moral (the value of be<strong>in</strong>g seen<br />

<strong>in</strong> your space as us<strong>in</strong>g modern technologies <strong>and</strong> thereby attract<strong>in</strong>g or reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

better talent). We know the bus<strong>in</strong>ess benefits from these th<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>and</strong> here<br />

is where you attempt to quantify those benefits.<br />

For <strong>in</strong>stance, the use of as <strong>SOA</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g a cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g approach to<br />

provide better access to systems for key customers should result <strong>in</strong> X additional<br />

sales with Y marg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> therefore Z profits. In many <strong>in</strong>stances, the<br />

soft benefits are as valuable as, or more valuable than, the hard benefits when<br />

consider<strong>in</strong>g the bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

<strong>Step</strong> 8: Create the F<strong>in</strong>al Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Case<br />

Creat<strong>in</strong>g the bus<strong>in</strong>ess case is someth<strong>in</strong>g we have been do<strong>in</strong>g throughout this<br />

chapter, but here is where you write it down for the stakeholders. At a m<strong>in</strong>imum,<br />

the bus<strong>in</strong>ess case should <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

1. A clear underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the current bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> IT issues the bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

is fac<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

2. The amount of money these issues are cost<strong>in</strong>g the bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

3. The proposed improvements when leverag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>SOA</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to address the identified bus<strong>in</strong>ess issues.
