In many respects, cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g is about abstract<strong>in</strong>g the cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g<br />

resource from the underly<strong>in</strong>g hardware <strong>and</strong> software, which are remotely<br />

hosted. Thus, you deal with the service <strong>and</strong> almost never with the<br />

needs <strong>and</strong> requirements of the platform, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, monitor<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the cost of the hardware <strong>and</strong> data center space. More simply put,<br />

cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

Stuff you do not own.<br />

Stuff you do not ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>, at least from an <strong>in</strong>frastructure po<strong>in</strong>t of view.<br />

Stuff you do not see.<br />

Stuff you pay for as a subscription or perhaps get for free.<br />

Exp<strong>and</strong>able on dem<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Reducible on dem<strong>and</strong>.<br />

The concept is to leverage comput<strong>in</strong>g resources that you do not own or<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> thereby lower the cost of comput<strong>in</strong>g through economies of<br />

scale. The more that organizations share cloud comput<strong>in</strong>g resources, the less<br />

they should cost (see Figure 2.1).<br />

Moreover, you can leverage comput<strong>in</strong>g resources that provide more prebuilt<br />

component parts <strong>and</strong> thereby avoid hav<strong>in</strong>g to build everyth<strong>in</strong>g from<br />
