Sanctification Wednesday, February 18, 2015 THE WONDER OF THE WILDERNESS READ: Deuteronomy 8:2-4 KEY VERSE: Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments. –Deuteronomy 8:2 (NRSV) Sanctification is a process that describes God’s work in us with the aid of the Holy Spirit. We are set apart from some things to be prepared for something. There are things God has for us that we cannot enter into so long as we stay in our current space. This means that God will lead us through difficult places on the path to sanctification. The children of Israel could not leave Egypt and go directly to the Promised Land. They had to go through a process of being set apart. For some, the wilderness meant losing the “good things” in Egypt, forgetting that those things were in the land where they were oppressed. In order to occupy the Promised Land, they had to be separated from their slave mentality. In the wilderness, without distractions, God prepares us for something new. The season of Lent invites us to remember the wilderness experience as we prepare to celebrate our Lord’s resurrection. –Rev. Obedience Thursday, February 19, 2015 FOLLOWING JESUS READ: John 14:15-21 KEY VERSE: “If you love me, keep my commands.” -John 14:15 (NIV) “Louise, you are going to mind me if it is the last thing you do!” How I often heard my mother say that during my childhood days. I quickly learned the meaning of obedience to my parents. However, what about obedience to God? In the gospel of John, obedience to God is underscored repeatedly. None of us will obey God’s law always, but we can start by honoring and meditating on the words of Jesus as we learn obedience to God. When we are obedient to the Lord, it is not the same as sticking to the speed limit to avoid getting a ticket. We obey God’s Word because we want to enjoy being filled with the love of Jesus. Being obedient to Him is getting to know and love Him. It’s having a personal and intimate relationship with Him. When we trust God’s wisdom and experience His unconditional love, there’s no reason to cling to self-will. Why would we not want to obey someone who knows us better than we know ourselves and longs to share the joy of salvation with us? –Louise L. Nickens LOOKING WITHIN: What is God asking me to do today?
