Obedience
FOLLOWING JESUS
READ: John 14:15-21
KEY VERSE: “If you love me, keep my commands.” -John 14:15 (NIV)
“Louise, you are going to mind me if it is the last thing you do!” How I often
heard my mother say that during my childhood days. I quickly learned the
meaning of obedience to my parents.
However, what about obedience to God? In the gospel of John, obedience
to God is underscored repeatedly. None of us will obey God’s law always, but
we can start by honoring and meditating on the words of Jesus as we learn
obedience to God.
When we are obedient to the Lord, it is not the same as sticking to the speed
limit to avoid getting a ticket. We obey God’s Word because we want to enjoy
being filled with the love of Jesus. Being obedient to Him is getting to know
and love Him. It’s having a personal and intimate relationship with Him. When
we trust God’s wisdom and experience His unconditional love, there’s no
reason to cling to self-will.
Why would we not want to obey someone who knows us better than we
know ourselves and longs to share the joy of salvation with us?
LOOKING WITHIN: What is God asking me to do today? Will I obey?
Dear Lord, help me to listen to and obey your instructions. In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
