My True Self
READ: Luke 8:40-48
KEY VERSE: And He said to her, “… your faith has made you well. Go in
peace.” -Luke 8:48 (NKJV)
For Christians, our defining of faith has been that as unseen, yet hopeful of its
existence or manifestation. We’ve been taught you only need faith the size of
a mustard seed and with time it will grow into something strong, secure and
unmovable. But what is our faith in? God? Our abilities? Or in knowing our
true self?
Paul Tillich, one of my favorite theologians, dares us to give ourselves to
something larger than we are in the hope that we shall find our true selves.
He says this “giving ourselves to something larger” is the heart of religious
faith. The woman in Luke 8:48 gave something larger than what she believed
to possess. When we yield to that which is larger than us – the Almighty –we,
too, will experience faith and call ourselves well and at peace.
–Rev. Laura O. White
LOOKING WITHIN: What prevents me from giving my all to something larger
than my understanding? How can I experience the essence of my faith and
live an abundant life?
Dear Lord, I pray for the wisdom to know you are greater in ways I could
ever imagine. I pray that I experience my faith in you and your faith in me.
In the name of Jesus I ask it all. Amen.
