GROUP EXERCISE NO. 3.6 – PEST RISK MANAGEMENT
For those pests presenting unacceptable risks, the conclusions of the pest risk
assessment are used to support decisions on the strength and nature of measures to
be used to reduce those risks to an acceptable level. Pest risk management, therefore,
is the process of evaluating and selecting risk management options to reduce the risk
of the pest(s) identified in the pest risk assessment.
Mitigation measures may be applied at different stages between origin of the pathway
and its final destination. A scenario diagram detailing the sequence of events between
the pest’s first association with the pathway and its establishment in the PRA area
helps to identify key areas where mitigation measures may be applied effectively.
Outline the sequence of events that must take place for Scirtothrips aurantii to be
introduced to India following importation of cut flowers from Africa. Identify points
along this timeline at which mitigation measures could be applied. More boxes can be
added to the diagram below if required.
