FACILITATOR’S GUIDE – INTRODUCTION<br />
Time required<br />
Approximately 30 minutes<br />
Instructions to facilitator<br />
1) Distribute course materials and name tags to participants.<br />
2) <strong>Train</strong>er introduction: Introduce yourself (and o<strong>the</strong>r facilitators if appropriate) and detail your<br />
background and experience. Alternatively, you may participate in <strong>the</strong> group<br />
introduction/icebreaker.<br />
3) Participant introductions/Icebreakers: There are many choices when it comes to icebreakers. You<br />
may have your own preferences.<br />
4) Participants’ expectations: Ask <strong>the</strong> group to openly feedback <strong>the</strong> four ‘G’s’. You should write<br />
<strong>the</strong>se down on butcher’s paper or on a whiteboard (or transparency) so you can regularly refer to<br />
<strong>the</strong>m during <strong>the</strong> 2-day course and assess if <strong>the</strong> workshop is meeting <strong>the</strong>ir needs.<br />
- Gives (what participants can give to <strong>the</strong> workshop)<br />
- Gains (what <strong>the</strong>y hope to gain from <strong>the</strong> workshop)<br />
- Ghastlies (what <strong>the</strong>y hope does not happen in <strong>the</strong> workshop (eg. too simple, too<br />
advanced, not relevant, etc)<br />
- Ground rules (what rules can <strong>the</strong> group agree on (eg. one person talk at a time, no<br />
single person to dominate discussion, etc)).<br />
5) Discuss course objectives and outline of <strong>the</strong> two-day workshop.<br />
6) Address housekeeping issues – toilets, breaks, coffee/tea/water, any OH&S issues, etc.<br />
