TEENS AND ETHICS: Real People
Under the direction of a counselor, real teens talk about the potentially life-changing decisions they face every day -
decisions about smoking, drinking, drugs, sex, lying, cheating and shoplifting. Viewers are asked to think about their own
choices and values and what it means to be "ethical." Through first-person interviews and discussions about real-life
experiences, students see that all choices have consequences and that everyone makes poor decisions. By learning from those
bad decisions, teens can grow into the kind of people they want to be: those who not only know what is right, but who do the
right thing. #11034/1945 29 minutes 2007 *Includes Guide $149.95
WHEN I KNEW I WAS GAY
Inspired by the book of the same name - asks one simple question: when did you know that you were gay? The film opens
with Bailey and Barbato describing their own "aha!" moments and then brings together 16 interviewees for an intimate group
discussion. Though some of the stories are told with a sense of loss, most are proud affirmations of sexual identity,
supporting the conviction that recognizing and embracing one's sexual orientation is essential to being true to oneself.
Illuminating and moving. An HBO Production. #12329/0405 35 minutes 2008 $129.95 Grades 9 to 12
PROTECT YOURSELF: Personal Safety
on the Internet
This documentary-style program features real teens
talking about their Internet experiences ranging from
frequent messages from people they don't know to
invitations to gamble. Several teens talk about
harassment, from both the standpoint of the harasser and
the victim. A guidance counselor explains to the viewers
that the Internet can be viewed as a highway with lots of
different rules intended to protect everyone who uses it.
Safety is discussed and the teens talk about how they
limit the information they post. Teens learn to be
assertive and smart when it comes to their actions on the
Internet, and discover how to protect themselves and
draw the line with anyone who is inappropriate. Students
will realize that harassment, sexual predators, and an
addiction to gambling are Internet risks and understand
never to give personal information on the Internet to
someone they don't know.
RELATIONSHIPS THAT HURT: Dating, Violence
and Abuse
In this documentary-style program, real teens talk about
what constitutes abuse and why they think teens are
vulnerable in romantic relationships. Experts explain how
teens often don’t tell anyone what is happening because
they are ashamed, or they want to maintain control, and
don’t want their parents stepping in to tell them what to
do. Explains how abusers engage in violence in order exert
power and control over the victim. Abusers try to isolate
the victim from friends and family in order to maintain
complete control. Teens are advised how to get help, and
how to help a friend who is being abused. While girls are
by far the most frequent targets, the fact that boys also
can be victims of dating abuse, is explored and discussed.
Students will: EXPLORE the dynamics in an abusive dating
relationship. RECOGNIZE abusive behavior and the
warning signs of abuse. UNDERSTAND the negative
consequences of dating violence and how to avoid it.
DATING AND SEXUAL RESPONSIBILITY
This program is a well-researched, mini-curriculum, designed for high school health classes or small training groups. It can be
readily adapted to any busy class schedule. The instruction incorporates role-playing and discussion to build awareness about
coercive sexual behavior and how to prevent it. The series includes four units, which can be viewed together or separately:
COERCION: What Is It? The purpose of this unit is to create more awareness among teens about coercive sexual behavior.
To show that coercive sexual behavior violates individual rights.
To recognize that coercive sexual behavior can happen in different ways.
To understand the hurtful effects of coercive sexual behavior.
To explore why coercive sexual behavior happens.
To clearly define coercive sexual behavior.
To differentiate healthy sexual development from coercive sexual behavior.
BELIEFS, ATTITUDES, AND EXPECTATIONS - The purpose of this unit is to explore and understand teens' underlying
attitudes, beliefs, and expectations about coercive sexual behavior. Specifically, the instruction has these goals:
To be able to identify different forms of sexual coercion.
To recognize and responsibly deal with "mixed messages".
To explore popular misconceptions (myths) teens have about coercive sexual behavior.
To build skills around recognizing coercive behavior and beliefs.
To examine differences in personal expectations for sex.
REFUSALS AND RESPONSES - The purpose of this unit is to build positive social skills for refusing sexual advances and
responding to refusals. Specifically, the instruction has these goals:
To explore how couples can better deal with differences in personal expectations for sex.
To understand why refusals may be to difficult to give for females, and take for males.
To learn about and practice caring ways to refuse and respond to sexual advances.
THE VIRTUAL DATE CD - It is virtual because the viewer takes the perspective of the person going on a date - what that
person sees, thinks, and does. And yes, this activity is for everyone. There is a story version for guys and for girls.
It is interactive because the viewer plays a key role in directing the events of the story. At certain points, the story stops and
the viewer has to decide what he or she will do next on the date. Choices lead cooperative or coercive outcomes.
It is educational because the viewer receives feedback from the actors about the particular outcome he or she created.
#12810/1470 *Includes three DVDs (total 57 minutes) and one CD, as well as a 95-page Leader's Guide 2002 $349.95
