Professionals in health care, education, and anyone who works with the public will benefit from the information in these
programs. The viewer will gain insights into recognizing when AD/HD might be a factor in observed behaviors, and methods
for interacting more effectively with these individuals. They will also increase their knowledge of both the medications and
behavioral therapies currently in use, allowing them to support the individual's
treatment process. The information in these programs also highlights the impact of
increased technological exposure on this disorder.
AD/HD: Identification and Assessment - Provides an overview of AD/HD, including
demographics, symptoms, and affects on daily life. Testing, evaluation, and
challenges in making the diagnosis are discussed. Gender and age differences are
outlined, and short scenarios illustrate the ways in which AD/HD affects individual
behavior. The program also delineates known predisposing factors and physiologic
variables. The newer understanding of AD/HD as a disorder of the brain's executive
functions is covered in detail. The role of family, friends, and associates in
diagnosis and treatment is also addressed. 21 minutes
AD/HD: Medication Strategies - The information in this program will provide the
learner with a good working knowledge of the stimulant and non-stimulant
medications currently used to treat adult and childhood AD/HD. Topics covered
include drug classifications, specific medications, effects and side effects. Also
included is information on drug adherence and reasons for non-adherence; self-medication with alternative substances;
scientific data on the relative danger of abuse of stimulant medications; and previous vs. current understandings of how
these medications work to improve behavior in AD/HD. Short scenarios augment the content. 24 minutes
AD/HD: Behavioral Strategies - This program focuses on the various behavioral techniques in use or under investigation for
the treatment of AD/HD. A comprehensive treatment program for the disorder is discussed. The value of counseling, tutoring,
and coaching is delineated and a variety of specific therapeutic modalities are explained. The program also addresses the
CANCER AS A FAMILY DIAGNOSIS: Supporting
the Caregivers Series
This series describes the reactions of patients and family
members at the time of diagnosis, during treatment, and
at the end of life; and suggests intervention healthcare
care, home care, and hospice programs provide strategies
to assist families during these times. In addition,
interviews with oncology patients and their families
Radiation and chemotherapy often make patients wonder
which is worse - cancer or the weapons used to fight it?
This program examines the many side effects of cancer
treatments, revealing essential medical facts behind them
and suggesting ways for cancer patients to feel better,
despite the likelihood of pain, nausea, and other
debilitations. Discussions address many frequently asked
questions, such as: When should treatment side effects be
considered too severe? Which of them can be lifethreatening?
What methods exist for reducing the impact
of side effects and tangibly increasing quality of life?
Expert commentary comes from Dr. Barry Meisenburg of
the University of Maryland and Dr. Shakun Malik of
Georgetown University.
DEAR TALULA
At 38, Lori Benson, an aspiring filmmaker, was relishing
life and motherhood with her one-year-old daughter
Talula. Then a single phone call changed her life forever:
it was her doctor; the diagnosis was breast cancer; and
surgery was imperative. Mixing verité footage, with home
videos and family photographs, Dear Talula is an intimate
autobiographical portrait of Lori's battle with breast
cancer. The film follows Lori after she receives the news -
the complicated and often confusing medical choices, the
doctors' visits, surgeries, chemotherapy and search for
alternative therapies, as well as the support and
encouragement she receives from loved ones, and tender
moments shared with Talula. A portrait of a woman whose
grace and courage allow her to transform her breast
cancer diagnosis into a journey of self discovery.
