THE ENVIRONMENT AND OUR EARTH
New! A PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY
"The documentary will spark discussions and inspire others to consider adopting a more sustainable and environmentallyfriendly
approach in their business plans." Video Librarian, May/June 2008
Envision a society where economic opportunity, social justice and sustainable culture all depend on environmental
stewardship. Imagine a world where nurturing the health of the planet is the catalyst for global financial success and social
stability. Can you? Ten years ago, 14 business owners in Portland, Oregon did. Using a sustainability tool called The Natural
Step, these 14 business owners looked at their business plans through the lens of environmental sustainability and began the
journey to create businesses that would be responsible for Earth’s natural systems while building economic growth. Along
the way, all 14 developed A Passion for Sustainability. Join these inspiring pioneers as they describe the journeys they have
taken, the challenges and unseen rewards they have experienced and their ultimate vision of a sustainable culture. Prepare
to be inspired, motivated and energized to begin your journey and find your own Passion for Sustainability. *Also included -
BECOMING GREEN: Growing Environmental Awareness
This boxed set features four programs discussing important environmental topics:
THE CAR OF THE FUTURE - What will the car of the future be like? Will it run on hydrogen, batteries, ethanol, or some asyet
undiscovered technology? Find out as NOVA and the much-loved "Car Talk" brothers, Tom and Ray Magliozzi, from public
radio, take a light-hearted but knowledgeable look at the serious issue of what's to come for our transportation. 54 minutes
SOLAR ENERGY: Saved by the Sun - Can solar power help save the Earth from the ravages of global warming? In the face of
steeply rising oil prices and political turmoil in the Middle East, there's new urgency and enthusiasm for finding ways to make
solar power more efficient and affordable. NOVA presents a provocative mix of scientist, economists, and ordinary citizens
who are all pushing the envelope of solar power's untapped potential. 56 minutes
GLOBAL WARMING: What's Up With the Weather? Deadly flooding in Africa. Catastrophic hurricanes in the U.S. Record high
temperatures worldwide. Are these natural, temporary glitches in our global climate, or is the devastation the result of
global warming? The weather is different now--but why? Find out when NOVA and FRONTLINE join forces to determine what's
up with the weather. 111 minutes
RACHEL CARSON'S SILENT SPRING - Rachel Carson's great love of the natural world drove her to write an expose of the
chemical industry and its unregulated use of DDT. Though she was viciously attacked, called "an ignorant and hysterical
woman," Silent Spring became an instant bestseller, was translated into 22 languages and changed the way we think about
the natural world. 56 minutes
*Special DVD features include: printable materials for educators for SOLAR ENERGY and GLOBAL WARMING; access to program
Web sites; scene selection; and described video for the visually impaired on CAR OF THE FUTURE and SOLAR ENERGY.
WALKING ON OIL: Alberta's Oil Sands
This program focuses on this huge fuel resource and the hazards and threats it poses to the environment. The fuel from the
tar sands is thick and heavy, bound to water and sand. Extraction and refinement of the oil requires an enormous amount of
energy and water, and destroys countless miles of irreplaceable forest land. Tar sands oil production creates 2 to 3 times as
much greenhouse gas as production of conventional oil, thus contributing greatly to global warming. Enormous machinery is
used to remove trees, rocks, soil and sand from the earth. Once the tar sands are removed, the resulting huge holes in the
ground remain along with toxic, water-borne tailings. As the Greenland ice cap melts, it may raise ocean levels by 20 feet,
flooding major cities and coastlines worldwide. As a world together, we have to make the right decisions about the
extraction and use of Alberta's immense oil resource. #12164/2003 60 minutes 2008 $149.95
CATCHING THE SUN: The Physics of Solar Energy
Two forms of energy that we use every day are electrical energy and heat. During the 20th century we came to rely on fossil
fuels as the ultimate source of these energy forms but now, energy from renewable sources is becoming more commonly
used. This program investigates the three main ways in which we currently use solar energy to power our homes: solar hot
water, solar photovoltaic - solar panels to generate electricity directly, and solar thermal arrays that use heat from sunlight
to generate electricity in large commercial plants. We explain the science involved in each type in straightforward terms,
look at practical considerations and take a look at new developments in this exciting area of renewable energy generation.
