WALKING ON OIL: Alberta's Oil Sands
This program focuses on this huge fuel resource and the hazards and threats it poses to the environment. The fuel from the
tar sands is thick and heavy, bound to water and sand. Extraction and refinement of the oil requires an enormous amount of
energy and water, and destroys countless miles of irreplaceable forest land. Tar sands oil production creates 2 to 3 times as
much greenhouse gas as production of conventional oil, thus contributing greatly to global warming. Enormous machinery is
used to remove trees, rocks, soil and sand from the earth. Once the tar sands are removed, the resulting huge holes in the
ground remain along with toxic, water-borne tailings. As the Greenland ice cap melts, it may raise ocean levels by 20 feet,
flooding major cities and coastlines worldwide. As a world together, we have to make the right decisions about the

CATCHING THE SUN: The Physics of Solar Energy
Two forms of energy that we use every day are electrical energy and heat. During the 20th century we came to rely on fossil
fuels as the ultimate source of these energy forms but now, energy from renewable sources is becoming more commonly
used. This program investigates the three main ways in which we currently use solar energy to power our homes: solar hot
water, solar photovoltaic - solar panels to generate electricity directly, and solar thermal arrays that use heat from sunlight
to generate electricity in large commercial plants. We explain the science involved in each type in straightforward terms,
