Clifton Thurmond has taught in the Lee’s Summit R7 School district since 1999 where he conducts<br />
the Symphonic Band and the Percussion class at Lee’s Summit West High School. He also travels<br />
each day to Summit Pointe Elementary and Cedar Creek Elementary to teach beginning band. Clif<br />
is also the Worship Leader at Deerbrook Covenant Church in Lee’s Summit.<br />
Mr. Thurmond completed his Master of <strong>Music</strong> in Education at the University of <strong>Missouri</strong>, Kansas<br />
City in 2007 where he studied with Joe Parisi. He received his Bachelor of <strong>Music</strong> Education degree<br />
from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1998 where he studied with Allan McMurray and Tom<br />
Caneva.<br />
Clif resides in Lee’s Summit with his wife, Angie, and their two children, Emory (8) and Miles<br />
(6).<br />
Shawn Harrel teaches band, jazz band, and IB <strong>Music</strong> at Lee’s Summit West High School and Digital<br />
Media Technology at Summit Technology Academy. He is a part-time announcer at KCUR 89.3 FM<br />
and teaches instrumental arranging at the University of <strong>Missouri</strong>, Kansas City.<br />
Mr. Harrel completed his master of music in jazz arranging and composition at the University of<br />
North Texas where he studied arranging with Paris Rutherford and jazz piano with Dan Haerle.<br />
Upon Mr. Haerle’s retirement from classroom teaching, Mr. Harrel directed The Zebras (jazz<br />
keyboard ensemble), a group directed by Haerle from 1980 to 2002.<br />
Mr. Harrel’s bachelor’s degree is in music education from <strong>Missouri</strong> State University. While at MSU,<br />
Shawn was a staff arranger for the Pride Marching Band as well as the band’s drum major for four<br />
years. His arrangements were performed at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and Chiefs and<br />
Rams football games to name a few.<br />
