Sam Pilafian is perhaps best known as the founding tubist of the internationally<br />
renowned Empire Brass Quintet. He has also recorded and performed with the<br />
Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Orchestra of St.<br />
Luke’s, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Lionel<br />
Hampton, and Pink Floyd. While a fellow at the Tanglewood <strong>Music</strong> Center he was<br />
invited by Leonard Bernstein to perform on-stage in the world premiere of Bernstein’s<br />
MASS, which opened the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He is<br />
currently Professor of <strong>Music</strong> and Director of the Concert Jazz Band at Arizona State<br />
University.<br />
“Breathing Gym - Sessions 1 & 2” (p.24, 27)<br />
Warm-ups for wind instrument players usually consist of exercises to prepare the fingers and lips. Warmups<br />
for singers often deveolp range and diction. However the source of the sound when playing a wind<br />
instrument or singing is often overlooked: breathing. Put simply: AIR-VIBRATION-SOUND.<br />
Breathing correctly when singing or playing a wind instrument uses a great deal more of our lung capacity<br />
than we normally use in everyday life. This extreme use of our airflow is a skill that must be practiced.<br />
The exercise in The Breathing Gym are designed to give musicians contral and efficiency of breath.<br />

Andrew Pulliam is currently the Director of Bands at Southeast Middle School in<br />
the Hazelwood School District. Prior to teaching at Hazelwood Southeast Middle<br />
School, he served as Director of Bands at Southwest Early College Campus in the<br />
Kansas City, MO School District. Andrew is currently in his fifth year of teaching.<br />
He has taught at the middle school and the high school levels. Andrew has served as<br />
department chair; he has been on course revision committees, and also helped rewrite<br />
curriculum. He is a member of MMEA/NAfME, HNEA, and Phi Mu Alpha- <strong>Music</strong><br />
Fraternity for Men. Andrew received his Bachelor of <strong>Music</strong> Education from the<br />
University of Central <strong>Missouri</strong> in 2007. Upon graduation, Andrew participated in<br />
the Kansas City Residential Urban Internship, where, in place of traditional studentteaching,<br />
he began teaching as a regular classroom teacher.<br />
