Winifred Crock is currently the Orchestra Director at Parkway Central High School<br />

and maintains a private violin studio in St. Louis. During her tenure, the Central High<br />

music department was been awarded Grammy Gold Signature school status as one of<br />

the top music departments in the country. She has taught in private studio situations<br />

including university and conservatory preparatory programs and independent private<br />

studio for 33 years. Complete bio on page 50.<br />

“Up, Down & Sideways: Aural Skill Development for the Young Ensemble <strong>Music</strong>ian” (p.41)<br />

This presentation and interactive session will include the introduction of twelve vital aural skills for a<br />

string ensemble performer. It will include materials that can facilitate this education and sequences to<br />

assist in instruction for young players within an ensemble setting..<br />

Davine Davis is an Assistant Executive Director with the <strong>Missouri</strong> State High<br />

School Activities <strong>Association</strong> (MSHSAA). She has held this position since June, 2004.<br />

Along with music, Davine is also responsible for administering girls volleyball, sideline<br />

cheer, dance and winter guard, performance groups for state basketball; foreign student<br />

eligibility, sanctioning of MSHSAA sports and activity events and all rulebook<br />

mailings. Davis received her BS Ed in <strong>Music</strong> Education in 1994, a Master in Education<br />

in 1998 and a Specialist in Education (Secondary School Leadership) in 2001 at<br />

Northwest <strong>Missouri</strong> State University. Prior to this position Davine served as an instrumental<br />

music director for 10 years in northwest <strong>Missouri</strong> and southwest Iowa. She<br />

also served as an adjunct instructor in 2003 at Northwest <strong>Missouri</strong> State University<br />

teaching graduate summer courses for the College of Education in southwest Iowa.<br />

Open to any music educator interested in updates regarding MSHSAA By-Laws and rules pertaining to<br />

music events conducted througout the school year as well as updates from the MSHSAA <strong>Music</strong> Advisory<br />

Committee and MSHSAA Festival Manager <strong>Program</strong>.<br />

JoDee Davis is Associate Professor of Trombone at the University of <strong>Missouri</strong>-<br />

Kansas City Conservatory of <strong>Music</strong> and Dance. She is second trombone of the Santa<br />

Fe Opera and a member of the <strong>Missouri</strong> Brass Quintet. Formerly principal trombone<br />

of the Spokane Symphony, she has also performed with a number of other orchestras<br />

in the United States and in Italy.<br />

Currently she plays extra with the Kansas City Symphony and the St. Louis Symphony<br />

Orchestra. She was a member of the highly acclaimed trombone quartet PRISMA.<br />

The UMKC Trombone Ensemble, under Davis’ direction, has won Honorable<br />

Mention in the International Trombone <strong>Association</strong>’s Emory Remington Trombone<br />

Choir Competition, and performed at the 2009 MMEA Conference.<br />

Davis received the Doctor of <strong>Music</strong> degree in Brass Literature and Performance from<br />

Indiana University, and the Master’s degree in Trombone Performance and Bachelor<br />

of <strong>Music</strong> degree in <strong>Music</strong> Education from the University of Northern Iowa. She has<br />

released a solo compact disc on the Albany Records label entitled In the Moment, with<br />

pianist Eric Charnofsky. Davis is an artist/clinician for the Selmer Company.<br />

“Recruiting Trombonists- Ideas for Getting Them and Keeping Them” (p.38)<br />

It is often a challenge to get beginners to play trombone and stick with it. In this clinic, some of the factors<br />

influencing the choice of trombone for young students will be discussed, utilizing data collected in a survey<br />

of instrumental music teachers. Ideas for practice and technique to help keep students interested, encourage<br />

them to have fun, and be better ensemble players will be presented, as well as a sample “trombone demo”<br />

for potential trombonists..<br />
