She and her husband of twenty-five years, Kent, spend their leisure time traveling and<br />
doting on their dachshunds. Their recent travels have included South Korea, Japan,<br />
the Czech Republic, Hungary, Spain, Curaçao, St. Lucia and Australia. In 2007 Kent<br />
established a named scholarship at Millikin University in Kathy’s name to support a<br />
music education student in the pursuit of their degree.<br />
“The Joy of Singing: Songs, Games & Activities for Encouraging Independent Singer” (p.23)<br />
This extended pre-conference session will focus on songs, games and other classroom activities to foster<br />
independent and tuneful singing in young children. There will be a particular focus on ways to incorporate<br />
and encourage daily solo singing in the general music setting. This interactive session will provide a wide<br />
variety of experiences that translate directly into the classroom environment. Come - experience the “Joy”<br />
of singing!<br />
“The Kodály Volumes: Materials of Teaching” (p.24)<br />
Investigate the expression of elemental style and foundational teaching as found in the instructional<br />
resources and musical materials of Zoltán Kodály. Activities will include singing, movement, instrumental<br />
applications and literacy based instruction for student at all levels.<br />
“Lost in Transition - Bridging the Elementary to Secondary Divide” (p.26)<br />
Discuss the challenges of supporting students through the transition for elementary general music into the<br />
secondary ensemble environment. See video examples of transition activities that build on prior learning<br />
to improve vertical articulation in the music curriculum. Groups of teachers in a single feeder system are<br />
encourage to attend together.<br />
Scott Lang received his Bachelor of <strong>Music</strong> Education in the Fall of 1988 and<br />
completed his Master’s in Secondary Educational Administration. Prior to arriving<br />
at Marcos de Niza High School in 1999, he was Director of Bands at Tempe High<br />
School (Tempe, Arizona), where his bands performed at the Pasadena Tournament<br />
of Roses Parade, Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship, twice at the Arizona<br />
<strong>Music</strong> <strong>Educators</strong> Convention, and MENC’s Biennial Conference with the Canadian<br />
Brass. His bands consistently received Superior and Superior with Distinction ratings<br />
in the concert, marching, and jazz arenas.<br />
Mr. Lang was the 1995 recipient of the Governing Board Award of Excellence and<br />
the 2001 recipient of the Diablo Award for Educational Excellence. In addition, he is<br />
listed in “Who’s Who in American Education.” Mr. Lang is also founder of the Scott<br />
Lang Leadership Seminars, which deal with the development of student leadership in<br />
secondary school students. In 2003, he was named as one of the “50 Directors Who<br />
Care” by SBO magazine.<br />
Mr. Lang is author of Leadership Success, an interactive DVD/CD-Rom dealing<br />
with the development of student leadership, as well as Scott Lang’s Leadership Travel<br />
Guide, an experiential workbook for student learning and group leading.<br />

Join Scott as he reminds us all not about what we do, but why we do it. Your mind will be engaged while<br />
your spirit is renewed as we look at our profession through a more holistic lens.<br />
“All-State Member Session Leadership Survival ” (p.24)<br />
Through his unpredictable style and high energy antics, students will be engaged, entertained and<br />
educated all at the same time. We all know we want better student leaders, but don’t know how to create<br />
them. Scott’s unusual but pragmatic approach will put the ball in the students court as they are challenged<br />
to set their own bar of excellence and rise to it.<br />
