structure is best viewed while bathing inside
its central domed hall, when sunlight filters in
through the small skylights in the ceiling.
Wander past Margaret Bridge to the city’s
most important Turkish monument: the 16thcentury
Tomb of Gül Baba. It can be reached
via a steep cobblestoned street that leads up to
the affluent district of Rózsadomb (Rose Hill).
Gül Baba was a Turkish dervish saint who fell
during the Turkish siege of Budapest in 1541
and who was credited for bringing roses to
Hungary, hence the district’s name. His tomb
is still a place of Islamic pilgrimage. Climb to
the top of the hill for a wonderful panorama of
nearby Margaret Island and Pest.
