4 Welcome to the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace! et at the foot of the majestic Chain Bridge, the Gresham Palace came to life with great fanfare in 1906, under the skillful hands of Hungarian architect Zsigmond Quittner. He was commissioned by the London-based Gresham Life Assurance Company to design a grand edifice which would house the firm’s offices and several luxury residences. The building mirrored the opulent and undulating style of Secessionism, an architectural movement rooted in the Viennese avant-garde and similar to Art Nouveau. As with many palatial buildings in Budapest, the Gresham Palace fell into a state of disrepair during World War II and remained so throughout the communist era until it was
5 acquired by Gresco Investments Limited in 1998. A team of gifted artisans from wroughtiron specialists to stained-glass makers, ceramists and mosaicists were assembled to restore the beautiful workmanship of the original craftsmen. Gyula Jungfer created the front gates and peacock motifs; Géza Maróti designed the façade; Miksa Róth, renowned for the stained glass in many of Budapest’s Secessionist buildings, constructed the glasswork; and the Zsolnay Ceramics Factory was responsible for the radiant tiles. The hotel opened its doors in 2004 under the management of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and quickly became a prominent landmark on Budapest’s urban landscape. When visitors enter the ornate wrought-iron gates, they are overwhelmed by the beauty of the large T-shaped lobby, adorned with detailed ironwork, stained glass and marble. The sinuous patterns of the white-and-black mosaic f loor wind towards the ‘Tumbling Dolls’, a sculpture in three parts by contemporary Armenian artist Mamikon Yengibarian. Suspended below the atrium’s glass cupola is a custom-designed Preciosa chandelier made from hundreds of hand-shaped crystals – its light spilling onto the awe-inspiring scene. A warm greeting from hotel staff, and you feel as though you have truly arrived!
