Day tripping in Stalin’s city
ormerly known as Sztálinváros, Dunaújváros
played perfectly into the Soviet dictator’s
plan of the rigorous industrialization of the
Eastern Bloc. ‘Stalin City’ also served as a sister
city to Stalingrad in Russia and was built up
in a mere ten years, from 1950-1960, as an
extension of the old town of Dunapentele.
Very little has changed since those times,
which is why Dunaújváros is such a wonderful
example of living social realism. The designing
of this model industrial city involved the work
of many of the country’s top architects from
the 1950s onward. This is apparent in the
harmony of the city’s residential spaces, the
careful design of its squares and the atypical
embellishments known as ‘Stalinist Baroque’.
Set on the banks of the Danube, just 70
kilometers south of Budapest, Sztálinváros was
