winery has also enriched the local culinary scene
with its delightful Sárgaborház restaurant. In
the neighboring village of Mád, small producer
István Balassa, who frequently collaborates with
internationally-respected vintner István Szepsy,
produces outstanding wines. These can be
sampled at the Gusteau Kulináris Élményműhely
alongside delicious seasonal cuisine or on special
picnic tours. And where there are fine wines
there are usually artisanal cheeses, such as those
made at the Tokaji Sajtmanufaktúra.

Villány
Most of this region’s prized wineries can be
found in the bucolic village of Villány, which is
renowned for its full-bodied, spicy red wines.
Early records show that viticulture has existed
in the region since Roman times, but it was all
white until the Serbs introduced the Kadarka
grape in the 15th century. German settlers later
put the region on the world wine map with their
refined winemaking techniques. Hot summers
and relatively mild winters and the shelter of
the surrounding hills created a microclimate,
well-suited to the production of later arrivals
such as Portugieser, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot.
