28 District V & District XIII Business or pleasure Going downtown Home to Budapest’s most ambitious architectural achievements, the northern part of District V (Lipótváros) also comprises the heart of the city’s business and political affairs. A neatly patterned grid of streets gives way to wonderfully eclectic building styles from neo-Classical to neo-Gothic, and the local interpretation of Art Nouveau known as Secessionism. If you’re looking for late-night diversions, there are plenty clustered around busy Szent István tér. Szent István tér Dominating the square is Budapest’s largest church, St Stephen's Basilica, which took 54 years to build. It was plagued by setbacks including the passing of two of its three
29 architects, the collapse of its dome and heavy bombing during World War II. Any tour of this monumental building would not be complete without a rooftop stroll around the dome, or a visit to the reliquary where the mummified right hand of King St Stephen is on display. The square and surrounding streets are lined with a handful of highly recommendable restaurants and bars such as the newly opened KNRDY steak house or the popular Borkonyha, which specializes in local wines and inventive gastronomy. Another new kid on the block, the Trafiq bar, puts a sophisticated spin on the quintessential Budapest concept of 'ruin bar': a nightlife staple set up in disused urban spaces. Szabadság tér Nearby Szabadság tér (Freedom Square) was once home to the ominously massive 'New Building' commissioned by the Habsburgs as a barracks and military academy. It was later used as a prison during the 1848-49 Uprising. A geometrically landscaped garden bounded by the National Bank, the US Embassy and the former Stock and Commodity Exchange, was erected in its place at the beginning of the 1900s. At its center is the controversial monument to the Soviet Liberators. Wander just north of here to the House of Hungarian Art Nouveau, which contains a museum and café, and is a wonderful spot to rest your weary feet.
