CHAPTER SIXTEEN<br />

AFTER ADVENTISM<br />

W<br />

hen our family left <strong>the</strong> Seventh-day Adventist Church,<br />

we did not know where we were going or how we<br />

would survive. We just knew that God would supply all our<br />

needs. What we did not know is how painful, yet rewarding<br />

this process would turn out to be. We had many friends in<br />

<strong>the</strong> SDA Church who have a true grasp of <strong>the</strong> Gospel. These<br />

friends understood our process and would often tell us<br />

privately that <strong>the</strong>y were in a decision process <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

When we left <strong>the</strong> Foster Memorial Church, we did so making<br />

every effort to keep <strong>the</strong> ministry <strong>the</strong>re intact and to leave<br />

with grace and kindness. We did share our scriptural journey<br />

with <strong>the</strong> church family in a “Letter to Family and Friends.”<br />

We resigned as peacefully as we knew how. We did not have<br />

any hard feelings against anyone. Our experience with <strong>the</strong><br />

church had been positive. 1<br />

Once we left, however, we truly felt <strong>the</strong> barbs of<br />

rejection that are rooted in a <strong>the</strong>ology of exclusivity taught in<br />

Seventh-day Adventism. While some of our close friends<br />
