INTRODUCTION<br />
The purpose of this book is three-fold. First, I wish to<br />
answer some questions often posed to me as a former<br />
minister in <strong>the</strong> Seventh-day Adventist Church. There are<br />
many Adventists who ask us, my wife and me, about our<br />
process out of <strong>the</strong> denomination. For many in that system <strong>the</strong><br />
thought of leaving <strong>the</strong> church to join <strong>the</strong> larger Christian<br />
community is tantamount to apostasy from Christ. When we<br />
requested a transfer of our membership to <strong>the</strong> parish where<br />
we currently serve, our names were actually dropped from<br />
<strong>the</strong> Adventist Church records under <strong>the</strong> heading of apostasy.<br />
None of our former church members believed that we did not<br />
consider ourselves Christian. Nor did <strong>the</strong>y consider any area<br />
of our lives to be immoral or out of harmony with <strong>the</strong><br />
scriptural guidelines. Our “apostasy” status was based on <strong>the</strong><br />
fact that <strong>the</strong> Adventist Church does not recognize o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
churches as a legitimate option for anyone who once held to<br />
<strong>the</strong> Adventist <strong>the</strong>ological world view. Because of <strong>the</strong><br />
teachings of <strong>the</strong> Adventist Church, many believe that<br />
salvation is at stake when one leaves. Most cannot<br />
understand that <strong>the</strong>re could be any legitimate <strong>the</strong>ological<br />
concern with what <strong>the</strong>y believe is <strong>the</strong> truth. For <strong>the</strong>se friends,<br />
