Diagnostic module
Heatcraft introduced its ServiceMate
refrigeration diagnostic module at AHR
Expo in Anaheim, Calif. in January. It
features a single connection for all
wiring. LED indicators show the status
of each control circuit component,
along with compressor, solenoid and
input control voltage. The ServiceMate
will become standard on all Heatcraft
brands of single-dual compressor vertical
condensing units and 3-40 hp semihermetic
horizontal condensing units.

AHR Expo technology award
A Quebec-based instrument manufacturer drew considerable
interest at the recent AHR Expo in Anaheim, Calif.
with its infrared refrigerant gas transmitter.
In fact the VA 301IRF from the Vulcain division of BW
Technologies took top spot in the Tools and Instruments
class in the AHR Expo Innovation Awards.
The VA 301IRF is unique in that the sensor and transmitter
are separate modules, permitting real-time remote
sensing at distances up to 100 feet without the need for
pumps and other mechanical parts. This served a real
need in the industry that company sales and service reps
kept hearing about out in the field, reported company
president Guy Gervais, P. Eng.

Canadian firm launches R-22 replacement
An Ontario-based company has launched a retrofit replacement for HCFC R-
22 in air conditioning applications. SP22C from Protocol Resource
Management, Aurora, Ont., does not require a system oil change and works
well with the existing mineral oil. The company was granted a U.S. patent on
Dec. 30.
The pressure, temperature and operating characteristics of
SP22C are designed to match R-22 in AC applications. It
achieves this through a formulation of HFCs and oil miscibility
additives.
The manufacturer reports that performance in an optimized
system exceeds that of R-22. In a direct retrofit
application with no system modifications, SP22C performed
within four per cent of the original equipment manufacturer’s
capacity rating. In retrofits, the drier and TX valve
should be replaced and the super heat should be adjusted.
SP22C is non-flammable and has been tested for flammability
according to UL2182.
Company president James Flowers notes that SP22C
fulfils a need in the refrigeration market. “Current OEM
replacements for R-22, such as R-410a, are unsuitable
for retrofit applications because of significantly higher
operating pressures and the requirement for additional
safety approvals for system components.”

Gervais told P&HVAC that the company has had to
