Training drives success for
Viessmann and its customers
Acomprehensive training program
has been key in the North
American sales success of Europe’s
leading boiler manufacturer and its
contractor customers.

However, comprehensive product
knowledge is essential for the contractor
making the sale. “A lot of customers
will spend more if you give them a good
reason to do so,” noted Robert Waters,
C.E.T., manager of product training
and education, Viessmann Manufacturing
Company Inc., Waterloo, Ont..
A good technical knowledge – and
Viessmann seminars are technical to the
point that they can be overwhelming at
times – gives the contractor the ammunition
he needs to convince the customer
to spend more up front to save
money over the long term. “It’s tough to
sell a Viessmann product if you’ve never
been to a seminar,” Waters commented.
As well, update training is important.
“Our product has changed so much in
the past 10 years that you wouldn’t recognize
it. Viessmann is a company that
doesn’t stand still.”
Viessmann is constantly looking at
different ways to keep its installing contractors
up to date. However, the primary
focus is on Viessmann Academy
programs in Waterloo, Ont., Langley,
B.C. and Warwick, Rhode Island.
The learning experience begins as
soon as participants enter the building.
“There’s a certain ‘Wow factor’ when
you walk in the door,” notes Waters. A
static display in the lobby includes cutaway
versions of Viessmann boilers and
other hydronic heating products.
Every Viessmann Academy is home
to an operating lab. “We have the ability
to live-fire everything we sell.” There is a
large well-equipped classroom. A control
demonstration/teaching display
dominates one wall. At the Waterloo
plant, participants also tour the burner
test labs and assembly plant.
Seven different types of seminars are
available at the Viessmann Academy in
Waterloo this year, with similar programs
in Langley and Warwick.
Topics cover just about everything a
contractor or technician needs to know
to install and service efficient hydronic
heating systems:
• The Advanced Boiler Technology
program, for example, offers a comprehensive
overview of Viessmann Vitotec
technology, its applications and design
requirements. This full-day program is
ideal for those who are either new to
Viessmann products or require an update
on the technology.
• Condensing Boiler Technology
covers just that, along with a brief
overview of the Vertomat commercial
boiler and a detailed look at the
Vitodens wall-mounted gas-fired unit.
• Viessmann offers separate Service
and Troubleshooting programs for
Viessmann residential and commercial
boilers with a detailed review of hydronic
system problems and solutions.
• The Viessmann Control Technol-

includes a comprehensive overview of
the Vitosol product line including flat
plate and vacuum tube collectors,
pumping stations and controls.
Many contractors can’t find time
for training because they are running
just to keep up with existing business.
