OWNERSHIP, COACHING &ADMINISTRATIONMIKE SULLIVANOffensive Line15th NFL Season4th season with <strong>Chargers</strong>Mike Sullivan helped mold an offensive line that was besetby injury in 2011. Thirteen different players played on a linethat featured 11 different starters. Still, the line helped the<strong>Chargers</strong> rush for more than 1,800 yards and 16 touchdownsfor the second straight season, while allowing theeighth-fewest sacks.A guard and center, Sullivan was drafted by Dallas in thesixth round of the 1991 NFL Draft. He played in 48 careergames for Tampa Bay from 1992-95. Recognized for hiswork in the community, Sullivan earned Tampa Bay’s CommunityService Player of the Year Award in ’93 and he was afinalist for NFL Man of the Year honors in ’96. Sullivan alsostarted a program in his native Chicago to provided scholarshipsto students at his alma mater, St Francis de Sales High.In Tampa, Sullivan served two two-year terms as the Buccaneers’representative to the NFL Players Association.Sullivan started coaching in 1997, spending five seasons inGermany, France and Spain. In 2001, he landed his first NFLjob in Cleveland. Later with the Browns, Sullivan coachedtackle Joe Thomas, who earned Pro Bowl honors in his firsttwo seasons. Thomas became the Browns’ first Pro Bowllineman since ’87 and their first rookie Pro Bowler since ’82.Sullivan played collegiately at the University of Miami,starting 48 straight games at tackle from 1986-91. At thetime, it was the second-longest streak in school history. Heplayed on National Championship teams for the ’Canes in1987 and ’89. Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree in businessadministration and a master’s in international business managementat Miami, and in 1990 he received a Post-GraduateScholarship Award from the NCAA. Mathews andMike Tolbert gave the <strong>Chargers</strong> a solid one-two punch on theground as the duo combined for 14 rushing touchdowns.They also proved adept in the passing game, combining for104 catches, 888 yards and two additional scores.With Wilson back in the fold since 2008, the <strong>Chargers</strong>have scored 64 touchdowns on the ground while averagingmore than 1,705 yards per season, including a high of 1,864yards in 2011.Wilson’s 21 seasons of NFL coaching have been splitbetween San Diego and Atlanta. He made inroads to the NFLby participating in the NFL’s Minority Coaching InternshipProgram with both the Houston Oilers and Falcons.A native of Worcester, Mass., Wilson played football, basketball,baseball and ran track at Doherty High Schools. Fromthere it was off to Springfield College where he became anhonorable mention All-America wide receiver and earnedbachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education.Wilson began his NFL coaching career with the Falcons in1991. During his first six seasons in Atlanta, Wilson coachedthree 1,000-yard rushers, including the late Craig “Ironhead”Heyward, a Pro Bowler in 1995. During his second stretch inAtlanta, the Falcons rushed for an NFL-best 13,994 yardsand set several team rushing records, including single-seasonrushing yards (2,939 in 2006) and touchdowns (23 in 2002).Wilson is married to Nadine.MEDIA GUIDE | 20
