1964 AFL Championship GameBuffalo Bills 20, San Diego Chargers 7Sunday, Dec. 26, 1964 - War Memorial Stadium (Buffalo, NY)1963 AFL Championship GameSan Diego Chargers 51, Boston Patriots 10Sunday, Jan. 5, 1964 - Balboa Stadium (San Diego, CA)HISTORYLou Saban sent his Buffalo Bills out for post-Christmas gift afterthree lean years and one near miss in American Football League.Bills found what they were looking for and wrapped up defendingchampion San Diego Chargers, 20-7, for AFL Championship before40,242 howling hometown fans. Chargers started out as if theymeant to repeat their 51-10 conquest of Boston Patriots in 1963title game. They boomed from their own 20 in four plays with payoff26-yard strike from retiring quarterback Tobin Rote to tightend Dave Kocourek. Keith Lincoln’s PAT at 2:16 of first periodwas last time San Diego got on scoreboard. Disaster soon struck visitors when Lincolnwas forced out of action with broken rib on “the tackle heard around world” by Buffalolinebacker Mike Stratton. Coupled with absence of Lance Alworth, injury to Lincolnleft Chargers offense impotent. Buffalo forged to 13-7 halftime lead on field goals from12 and 17 yards by rookie ace Pete Gogolak and four-yard touchdown run by halfbackWray Carlton. Bills tallied again in final quarter on sneak by quarterback Jack Kemp.Score by Quarters Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 TotalSan Diego Chargers 7 0 0 0 7Buffalo Bills 3 10 0 7 20Tm Qtr Time Play Description (PAT & Drive) SD BUFSD 1 11:49 Kocourek 26 yd pass from Rote (Lincoln kick) (4-80) 7 0BUF 1 4:20 Gogolak 12 yd field goal (8-61) 7 3BUF 2 7:11 Carlton 4 yd run (Gogolak kick) (8-56) 7 10BUF 2 2:28 Gogolak 17 yd field goal (7-51) 7 13BUF 4 9:12 Kemp 1 yd run (Gogolak kick) (3-52) 7 20Attendance — 40,242Team Statistics SD BUFTOTAL FIRST DOWNS 15 21Rushing 7 12Passing 7 8Penalty 1 1NET YARDS RUSHING 124 219NET YARDS PASSING 135 168Attempts 36 20Completions 13 10Interceptions 3 0TOTAL OFFENSE 259 387INTERCEPTION RET. Lincoln accounted for 349 of them in virtuoso performancethat included touchdown sprint of 67 yards, touchdownreception of 25 yards, 206 yards gained rushing, 123 gained passreceiving and 20 gained passing. Lincoln’s heroics were mightilyabated by others on San Diego team that played with brilliance. Itwas powerhouse show by team that had failed in two previous tries to win AFL title.But Patriots, with league’s proudest defensive outfit, were no match for San Diegans.Splendidly prepared by Sid Gilman to combat Boston’s almost constantly rushinglinebackers, Chargers scored on their fourth scrimmage play, as well as their sixth and10th. Patriots’ ground attack suffered after fullback Larry Garron incurred headinjury midway through second period. Garron later returned to game but remained init only briefly.Score by Quarters Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 TotalBoston Patriots 7 3 0 0 10San Diego Chargers 21 10 7 13 51Tm Qtr Time Play Description (PAT & Drive) BOS SDSD 1 13:31 Rote 2 yd run (Blair kick) (4-72) 0 7SD 1 10:48 Lincoln 67 yd run (Blair kick) (2-67) 0 14BOS 1 7:01 Garron 7 yd run (Cappelletti kick) (7-66) 7 14SD 1 4:44 Lowe 58 yd run (Blair kick) (4-73) 7 21SD 2 7:05 Blair 11 yd field goal (7-74) 7 24BOS 2 2:41 Cappelletti 15 yd field goal (11-68) 10 24SD 2 :48 Norton 14 yd pass from Rote (Blair kick) (8-57) 10 31SD 3 9:14 Alworth 48 yd pass from Rote (Blair kick) (6-80) 10 38SD 4 6:47 Lincoln 25 yd pass from Hadl (pass failed) (6-45) 10 44SD 4 1:19 Hadl 1 yd run (Blair kick) [11-80] 10 51Attendance — 30,127Team Statistics BOS SDTOTAL FIRST DOWNS 14 21Rushing 6 11Passing 8 9Penalty 0 1NET YARDS RUSHING 75 318Attempts 16 32Yards Gained 77 328Yards Lost 2 10NET YARDS PASSING 186 292Attempts 37 26Completions 17 17Interceptions 2 0TOTAL OFFENSE 263 610Total Plays 59 60BOSTONRushing No Yds Avg Lg TDCrump 7 18 2.6 6 0Garron 3 15 5.0 7t 1Lott 3 15 5.0 6 0Yewcic 1 14 14.0 14 0Parilli 1 10 10.0 10 0Burton 7 3 3.0 3 0Passing A C Yds S-L TD Lg IN RtParilli 29 14 189 5-36 0 45 1 55.1Yewcic 8 3 39 0-0 0 23 1 14.1Receiving No Yds Avg Lg TDCappelletti 2 72 0 49 0Garron 2 6 0 5 0Burton 4 12 0 8 0Crump 2 28 0 28 0Coleclough 3 26 0 10 0Graham 2 68 0 45 0Lott 2 16 0 11 0INT No Yds Avg Lg TDNonePunting No Yds Avg TB I20 LgYewcic 7 328 46.7 3 0 68Punt Ret No Yds Avg FC Lg TDSuci 0 0 0.0 1 0 0BOS SDINTERCEPTION RET.
