He is responsible for managingthe public image and overall communications strategyfor the <strong>Chargers</strong>. This includes media relations and all organizationalmessaging. He is the team’s primary liaison for the<strong>Chargers</strong>’ and NFL’s broadcast partners, as well as local andnational media outlets.Johnston joined the <strong>Chargers</strong> in March, 1979 while attendingSan Diego State University. He earned a degree in journalismin 1981, and was named public relations assistant that year.He served as assistant director of public relations (1984-87)and director of community relations (1988-89), while also overseeingcommunity outreach and public affairs from 1990-00.Johnston was born in La Mesa, California, and attendedHelix High School. He is on the board of directors of theHuntington’s Disease Society of America, San Diego. He washonored by the national HDSA in October 2008 for his supportof the organization. While serving as president of theboard, the San Diego Chapter was named the national HDSAChapter of the Year in 2005 and ’07.
