94 COREY LIUGETDefensive End Draft 1 – ’116-2, 300 Illinois2nd NFL SeasonHialeah HS2nd with ChargersMiami, Fla.Corey Liuget had to grow up in a hurry as a San DiegoChargers rookie and the team’s first pick in the 2011 NFLDraft. He was drafted in April and handed a playbookshortly thereafter, but due to the NFL lockout, he wasunable to work with coaches and teammates until thelockout was resolved in late July. Furthermore, injuries hitthe defensive line hard and the young rookie was pressedinto immediate duty.Liuget became the Chargers’ opening day starter at rightdefensive end where he remained throughout the season. He started 13 of the 15 games in which he played and hisnumbers were solid with 26 tackles, five tackles for loss, asack, a forced fumble and three passes defensed.Work ethic is one trait that was drilled into Liuget at anearly age. His father, DeJa, was killed while visiting Corey’sgrandmother in Haiti in 1993. It left Corey’s mom, Lorene,to raise him and his four older brothers and sisters as a singleparent in Miami’s housing projects. When her kids wereyoung, Lorene enlisted their help to make ends meet. Shewould boil peanuts, make candy apples, conch fritters andsweet potato pies, which Corey and his brothers and sis-ters would sell. It worked and it taught all of the kids aboutwork ethic and discipline.Liuget went on to have a standout career at Miami’sHialeah High School. Despite hailing from a close-knit familythat tops 100 in number and a strong recruiting pushfrom the big in-state schools, Liuget opted to chart his ownpath and enrolled at the University of Illinois. After a coupleof years in Champaign, Ill., Liuget grew homesick thoughand contemplated returning home after his sophomoreseason. Some tough love from his mom persuaded him tostick it out and instead of moping over the situation, Liugetused it as motivation. He lost 25 pounds between hissophomore and junior seasons, and feeling re-invigorated,had a career year for the Fighting Illini in 2010. Liuget thenchose to leave school a year early and apply for the NFLDraft. The Chargers loved the toughness, tenacity andrelentless approach to the game that he showed and madeLiuget their first-ever first-round pick from Illinois.Liuget appreciates living in San Diego, a military city, ashis two older sisters, Ideidre and Latronika, both serve ourcountry in the U.S. Army.VETERANS &RETURNING PLAYERSTRANSACTION HISTORY: First-round pick (18), April 28,2011...agreed to four-year contract, Aug. 4, 2011.2011: Led team with two tackles for loss in first-career gameSept. 11 vs. Minnesota...helped close out NBC Sunday NightFootball win over Baltimore Dec. 18 with late fourth-quartersack.COLLEGE: Honorable mention All-America by Pro FootballWeekly and second-team All-Big Ten as junior in 2010...alsoteam captain and Fighting Illini Outstanding defensive lineman...rankedseventh in Big Ten in tackles for loss (12.5) andeighth in sacks (4.5) in ’10...Big Ten Defensive Player of Weekafter 1.5 tackles for loss vs. Fresno State...finished careerwith 125 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 25.5 tackles for loss, two forcedfumbles, three fumble recoveries and 13 quarterback hurries...played at Illinois from 2008-10...left school after junior season...sociologymajor.PERSONAL: Born in Miami, Florida...first-team all-state andall-area at Hialeah (Fla.)
