HISTORY OF CHARGERS UNIFORMHISTORY1960Helmet was white with gray facemask. It had dark blue bolt and black numbersoutlined in gold. Home jersey was Collegiate blue with white numbers on front,back and sleeves outlined in gold. White strip on each shoulder had dark blue boltoutlined in gold. Road jersey was white with Collegiate blue numbers on front,back and sleeves outlined in gold and white lightning bolts on sleeves outlined ingold. Was also Collegiate blue strip on each shoulder with white bolt outlined ingold. Pants were white with dark blue lightning bolt outlined in gold runningdown each leg. Owner Barron Hilton chose lightning bolts because he associated“Charge” of lightning with lightning bolt. He also liked bolts that were on helmetsof Air Force Academy football team, but wanted something slightly different, sohad “Chargers Bolt” designed to be different and placed on uniforms.1961-65Bolt on helmet, shoulders and pants is changed to gold. On home jersey, helmetand pants, bolt is outlined in blue. On road jersey, it is outlined in white.1966Bolt on helmet is changed to dark blue. Pants are changed to gold with solidwhite stripe running down each leg, outlined in blue. Stripe replaces lightning bolt.1967Gold bolt is placed back on helmet with blue outline. There is no strip on road pants.2007-11Uniforms feature Navy blue jerseys and white pants for most home games, whitejerseys and Navy pants for road games, and Powder blue jerseys with white pantsfor designated home games. On all jerseys, bolt has been moved down sleeve,below shoulder. Bolt is Gold and outlined in both powder blue and Navy. On Navyand Powder blue jerseys, bolt is in white strip, and on white jerseys, bolt is in Navyblue strip. Numbers are now on shoulder above bolt. Front of all jerseys haveChargers scripted across front above numbers and below NFL shield. Team name,numbers and player’s names all feature new font. Home white pants feature stripdown side of each pant leg with curved bolt in Navy strip to be worn with Navyjerseys and Powder blue strip to be worn with Powder blue jerseys. Navy pantsfeature same bolt inside of white strip down each pant leg. Helmet is changed tometallic-white and features Gold bolt outlined in Powder blue and Navy.2012Starting in 2012, Nike became the official uniform provider for the NFL. Theyunveiled the new Nike Elite 51 uniforms April 3 in New York. The Chargers’color scheme did not change. The only changes to the uniform are a thinwhite flap that previously followed the V-neck line now stops just below theshoulder numbers, and Nike’s emblematic swoosh appears on the left hip ofthe pants as well as on the right shoulder pad.
