CHAP. V.] THE VERB. 493. This is what is called the synthetic form <strong>of</strong>the verb. The S3r nthetic form is that in which thepersons are expressed by inflections or terminations:4. These six forms express the sense perfectly,without the accompaniment <strong>of</strong> the pronouns (exceptin the case <strong>of</strong> the third person singidar) :that is, C65CUP, as it stands, without using alongwith it the pronoun cu, thou, expresses perfectly"thoutakest ;" and so <strong>of</strong> the others.5: But there is another way <strong>of</strong> expressing thepersons, singular and plural, namely, by usingone fomi <strong>of</strong> the verb for the whole six, and puttingin the pronouns to distinguish the personsand numbers. This is what is called the analyticform <strong>of</strong> the verb.6. In this analytic mode <strong>of</strong> expressing the personsand numbers, the form <strong>of</strong> the verb that isused is the same as the form for the third personsingular and the;persons singular and plural areexpressed as follows :—Singular.Plural.1. C65C11O me, 1 take. 1. C65CI10 r ir>n we take.;2. £05010 cu, thou takest. 2. C65C11O fib, ye take.3. C650.10 f>6, he takes. 3. £650.16 riaO, they take.7. The third singular <strong>of</strong> the verb is not a syntheticform like the other five, that is, it does notinclude the pronoun as they do. In the thirdperson singular, therefore, the pronoun must bealways expressed in order to distinguish thenumber and person ;unless there is a noun, orthat the nominative is in some other way obviousfrom the construction.8. But generally speakingit is not allowable toexpress any other pronoun along with the correspondingsynthetic form <strong>of</strong> the verb:— For
