Chapter 6: Composition of Psalms 3-84) Both psalmists describe Yahweh as their protective “shield” using theword גֵ‏ ן ‏,מָ‏ which denotes a small, round shield. Psalm 3:4 depictsYahweh as “a shield about me”, whereas Psalm 7:11 reads, “my shieldis with God”.5) Immediately before their <strong>final</strong> declaration of confidence in Yahweh (i.e.,3:9 and 7:18), both psalms contain a section in which Yahweh fightsagainst the wicked. Psalm 3 portrays Yahweh arising like a mightywarrior and fighting against the psalmist’s enemies, striking them onthe cheek and breaking their teeth (3:7). Similarly, Psalm 7 describesGod preparing his sword and bow to fight against the unrepentant(7:13-14).
