In some areas, the East India Company ruled directlythrough its officials. Elsewhere it stood close behind the thrones of Hindumaharajas and Moslem nawabs who pliantly subserved the politics of Britishempire-building.The Portuguese had been confined to a few ports. The Dutch had been ousted.French power, though still considerable, was waning.
