When the grenade failed to reach its target and Madan Lai wasarrested, his fellow conspirator, Nathuram Vinayak Godse, came to Delhi.Godse, age thirty- five, was the editor and publisher of a Hindu Mahasabhaweekly in Poona in Tilak's Maratha country, and he was a high degree,Chitpawan Brahman.Subsequently, Godse, Madan Lal and seven others were tried together. The triallasted more than six months. Among other things, Madan Lal said he wasangered by the Indian Union's payment of 550,000,000 rupees to Pakistan. Thisexasperated Godse.'I sat brooding intensely on the atrocities perpetrated on Hinduism and its darkand deadly future if left to face Islam outside and <strong>Gandhi</strong> inside,' Godsetestified, 'and ....
