Only throughthe determination and endurance of competing bowlers wasthe sectional play completed at all. Semi-finals and finalswere postponed as were the finals. In spite of these measuresboth these stages were held under adverse conditions.Zone 2 was too strong for Zone 10 (88-35) at Halekulani whileZone 6 prevailed over Zone 3 (63-46) at Scone. The final tookplace at East Cessnock and following a terrific battle betweenthese two skilled sides. Zone 6 finished slightly the better toovertake Zone 2 to gain a narrow 8-shot victory (58-49).Congratulations are due to all participants and organisers whorose to the challenge of taking on the forces of nature.Elements-hardened competitors will hopefully fare better in2012 when the fixture has been scheduled for May.2011 Bowls NSW Senior Inter-Zone Sides Championship FinalZone 6 58 def Zone 2 49Charles Lees, BrianBurg, Neville Bradley,Rex Johnston21 defOwen Jefferson, BarryCartwright, RobertBradley, Ross Ball9William Ragan,Graham Solomons,Rodney Adamson,George McCartneyAlbert Beavis, KevinByford, Keith Fullick,Bruce Hampton16 def21 lostJames Towers, IanMacrae, JohnCarmody, NevilleDownesVic Papworth, BryanMorton, Laurie Wright,Sam Laguzza14262012 Senior Inter-Zone Sides ChampionshipPlayed at Rydalmere Central and Northmead BCs22-24 May 2012With brilliant sunshine and greens running well, a highstandard was expected and no one was disappointed. The first semi-final was played out between two metropolitanZones 10 and 11 with the former being a firm favourite. However the match eventuated into a titanic struggle withneither able to gain a crucial advantage against the other, andin a nerve-wracking finish, it was the underdog Zone 11 whichprevailed over the host Zone, 56 shots to 55 to stake a place inthe final. Country Zones 8 and 16 fought out the remainingsemi-final with the latter being the favourite. There was littlebetween the two sides in the first half of the match with Zone16 maintaining a narrow lead. To its credit Zone 8 fought backdoggedly to reduce the deficit to just a handful of shots butZone 16 held on resolutely for a 58-49 win. Many believed that Zone 11 had done very well just to makethe final. The lead see-sawed and at the half way mark Zone16 led 30-26. In a real cliff hanger neither side was able togain that vital break but suddenly Zone 11 shot out to a handy44-34 lead as the weather deteriorated. Zone 11 seemed tohandle the conditions better as it slowly increased its lead andthen scored a vital 8 to open up a 65-42 lead after 54 ends - awinning break as, with just 2 ends left, Zone 11 held the leadand went on to score a memorable 76-47 victory. The winningside won on all rinks with Ray Coombes winning 33-12 whichwas quite remarkable as his team trailed 6-12 early, GeraldWeinberg winning 22-19 and Les Thorne completing thetrifecta by winning 21-16.Congratulations go to Zone 11 on breaking the ice for themetropolitan Zones as this event has been dominated bycountry Zones since its inception.Bowls NSW, 2011-12 Annual Report & Year Book Page 22
