Regional Academies of Sport<strong>Bowls</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> is proud to continue partnering with the RegionalAcademies of Sport Lawn <strong>Bowls</strong> Programs.The Academies service the Central Coast, Far West, Hunter,Illawarra, North Coast, Northern Inland, Southern <strong>NSW</strong>, SouthEast, Western <strong>NSW</strong>, Western Sydney and South West Sydney.The Academies help developing athletes reach their potentialby providing specialist services to them in their localenvironment. The Regional Academies provide a steppingstone for athletes on the pathway to elite athletedevelopment. They aim to assist athletes progress from theirlocal academy to the <strong>NSW</strong> Institute of Sport and theAustralian Institute of Sport.<strong>R<strong>NSW</strong>BA</strong> Annual Presentation EveningFlush with sporting luminaries in <strong>NSW</strong> lawn bowls, sponsorsand media, the <strong>Bowls</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> Awards Presentation Evening washeld at the Bowlers Club (99 on York). While it was anoccasion to do honour to our achieving bowling members,acknowledgement was given to the vital role bowls plays in ahealthy community highlighting the necessary symbioticnature of interaction between vigorous communities, healthyclubs and a thriving sport.Our Phenomenal Sportsmen -2011 Bowler of the YearAron Sherriff (Ettalong Memorial) attained his third <strong>NSW</strong>Bowler of the Year title, sharing honours with Rex JohnstonOAM as the only bowlers to have received the award threetimes. Sherriff wrapped up 2010 by winning the WorldChampion of Champions Singles. His impeccable formcontinued, capturing all four Zone 15 Championships in 2011and then the Greater <strong>NSW</strong> State Championships claiming theprized State Singles title and finishing runner-up in both theState Pairs and State Triples events. Sherriff also played asignificant role in the <strong>NSW</strong> State Side 2011 campaign that sawthe side scoop every interstate series they played, includingthe Australian Sides Championship, where Sherriff skipped thebest performed rink of the championships. Aron was unableto accept the award in person but team mate Wayne Turley,who accepted the award on his behalf, acknowledged Sherriffas a true ambassador for the sport of bowls.2011 Most Improved Bowler of the YearThe 25th awarding of the <strong>NSW</strong> Most Improved Bowler of theYear is the first time joint winners have been announced –Carl Healey (Roselands) and Michael Clarke (Cabramatta). CarlHealey was an outstanding performer at the 2011 Greater<strong>NSW</strong> State Championships, winning both the State Fours andTriples and was a semi-finalist in the 2011 <strong>Bowls</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>Champion of Club Champion Singles. Healey also won the2011 Zone 13 Pairs title and was runner-up in the 2011<strong>Bowls</strong>bet Premier League as a member on the Roselands’ side.Michael Clarke (Cabramatta) became only the second personin history to claim both the <strong>NSW</strong> State Pairs title and the <strong>NSW</strong>Champion of Club Champions Pairs title in the same year,following in the steps of Kevin Walsh (Hall of Fame InducteeNo 9) in 1996.Benefits and services provided to athletes include skilldevelopment training in their chosen sport; specialist adviceon sports science and medicine, nutrition and injuryprevention; competition and touring experience; strength andconditioning; high level coaching; uniforms and equipmentand subsidised travel and accommodation for competitionand training camps.The role of the Regional Academy in the development of lawnbowlers is becoming increasingly important. <strong>Bowls</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>views involvement with the Regional Academies as awonderful step forward for our sport and a fantasticopportunity for bowlers.2011 Senior Bowler of the YearWilliam Walton (St Marys) came through as the <strong>Bowls</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>Senior Bowler of the Year. Teamed with club mate RossAntram, William won the 2011 State Senior Pairs as well asthe Zone 5 Triples and a number of club successes.2011 Junior Bowler of the YearWith outstanding performances at Zone, State and Nationallevel, Sean Mawdsley (Warilla) is unlikely to forget his finalyear as a junior. He scooped the Zone 16 juniorchampionships, winning the singles, pairs and fours. At the<strong>NSW</strong> State Junior Championships he won both the singles andpairs titles and at the Australian Junior Championships, Seanrepresented <strong>NSW</strong> and collected gold in both the singles andthe fours. To top 2011 off, he was selected to the 2011Country Tour side, the first U-18 to be named in many years.2011 Disability Bowler of the YearThe 2011 Disability Bowler of the Year is Brian Lockyer(Walcha). Brian won gold in the singles and triples at the 2011International Deaf Lawn <strong>Bowls</strong> Championships, skipped histeam to victory at the Andrew Frew State Fours and, at clublevel, he secured the Walcha Fours Championship as well asrunner-up in the major singles. He is active in clubadministration, not the least of which is in his capacity asselector at Walcha.100 Tests PlayedWidely regarded as one of <strong>NSW</strong>’s most stand-out players,Shane Garvey was recognised for attaining the milestone of100 tests for <strong>NSW</strong>. Shane has won the <strong>NSW</strong> State Pairs (1996,2006), the Triples (2000) and Fours (2004) titles and, in 2011,he was a member of the Keno Hi-Jackers <strong>NSW</strong> State side thatwon every series included the Alley Shield in an unbeaten run.John Young Hall of Fame InducteeThe John Young Hall of Fame recognises the outstandingachievements and performance of the greats of the sport oflawn bowls in <strong>NSW</strong> and Sam Laguzza (Swansea) is the 2011inductee. Sam announced on the evening that he was retiringfrom representative bowls, but what an illustrious career –playing 322 tests for <strong>NSW</strong> and 28 matches representing <strong>NSW</strong>in the Senior State side. In 1991 Sam was named <strong>NSW</strong> Bowlerof the Year and in 2008 Senior Bowler of the Year. He haswon the 2002 <strong>NSW</strong> State Singles, the 1998 State Pairs, the<strong>Bowls</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>, 2011-12 Annual Report & Year Book Page 27
