am pleased to advise that the Association’s financial statushas remained in a positive phase with the announced netprofit of $25,721 for the 2011-2012 year. This result wasbrought about through CEO Greg Helm’s and Treasurer RonKing’s concerted efforts in keeping costs to a minimum andmaking wise investments which resulted in a slight rise ininterest rates. It should also be noted that considerable legalcosts were incurred during the compilation of the newConstitution and the Association changing from anincorporated association to a company limited by guarantee. In order to ensure that the Association financial positionremains in a healthy state it was deemed necessary that therewould have to be a small rise in subscription fees for 2012-2013.Bowls NSW had a successful year on the greens in 2011-2012with our all-conquering State side winning all events itcontested in 2011, indeed a wonderful effort. The sideexperienced a successful start to 2012 when it overcameVictoria in its annual test series to retain the shield. However,it just failed to successfully defend its National SidesChampionship on the Gold Coast despite defeating traditionalrivals Queensland (eventual winner) and Victoria. The Stateside finally had to settle for a close runner-up position but didcombine with the NSW Women to win the National ChampionTeams Cup for the second successive year.Bowls NSW had the honour of being nominated as a finalist intwo categories namely the Event of the Year (our inauguralIndigenous Tour) and the Organisation of the Year at the NSWSports Federation Annual Sports Awards. We soon ascertainedthat we had some very serious opposition from other sportingorganisations and sadly we did not experience a win in eithercategory but it was still an honour to be named as a finalistand it certainly paid a fine tribute to all the people who workso hard for our Association.Several national individual awards went to NSW bowlersincluding Ettalong Memorial’s Aron Sherriff who led the wayat Bowls Australia’s Awards Night when he took out the MaleBowler of the Year award, then capped it off by securing theBCiB International Bowler of the Year award. Warilla’s SeanMawdsley added to the euphoria when he claimed thenational Under-18 Male Bowler of the Year and Cronulla’s JackHawkins wrapped up an excellent night for Bowls NSW whenhe was announced as the ACEIT Coach of the Year. I alsoacknowledge and congratulate St Johns Park’s Steve GlassonChief Executive Officer’s ReportI would like to think that the past twelve months or so will beremembered as a period which saw the Association take agiant step forwards, through embracing new opportunitiesand implementing positive change for the long-term benefit ofthe sport.Embarking on fundamental and significant change to theConstitution of the Association seemed an overwhelming taskwhen it was taken on by the Board of Management some 18-24 months ago. However through their strategic foresight anda willingness to improve the operation and administration ofthe sport, Bowls NSW now has a structure which is modelledon the principles of Best Practice Sports Governance and hasalso transferred from an incorporated association to awho doubles as the National Coach for being named in theAustralia Day honours list as a recipient of the Order ofAustralia medal for his services to lawn bowls. The Bowlers Club Red Room in Sydney was the venue for our2011 Annual Presentation Evening and yet again the eveningwas declared a resounding success with TV identity JohnMangos returning to perform the duties of Master ofCeremonies. The large gathering in attendance obviouslythoroughly enjoyed the evening and as usual the bowlerawards for 2011 were the evening’s highlight with AronSherriff claiming his third Bowls NSW Bowler of the Year title. The Most Improved Bowler of the Year award was for the firsttime shared between Roseland’s Carl Healey andCabramatta’s Michael Clarke while St Mary’s William Waltontook out the Senior Bowler of the Year and Warilla’s SeanMawdsley was announced as Junior Bowler of the Year. TheDisability Bowler of the Year was Walcha’s Brian Lockyer whileCronulla’s Jack Hawkins took out the Coach of the Year titleand Ettalong Memorial’s Reg Richardson was named as SeniorClub Personality of the Year. The 2011 sole inductee into the John Young Hall of Fame wasNewcastle legend Sam Laguzza who, among many otherachievements, played a total of 322 tests for NSW and nodoubt this award would rate as one of the highlights of hisillustrious career. The Illawarra’s Shane Garvey wasrecognised for his achievement of playing 100 tests for NSWand the Southern Highland News’ Lauren Wright took out the2011 Media Award.Whilst we have certainly witnessed some changes in pastmonths it has to be stated that it is anticipated that there willbe further changes over the ensuing months to ensure thatthe Association and its affiliated bodies can be become moreefficient and continue to move forward in a progressivemanner to meet the challenges that almost certainly lieahead. The Board is doing everything in its power to ensurethe future of the Association is secure in the long term but aconsiderable improvement in the current economic climatewould certainly make the task just that little easier. Inconclusion, I wish everyone connected with Bowls NSW andour bowlers good health and good bowling and may each andevery one enjoy a successful 2012-2013 both on and off thegreen.Ian McKnightState Presidentcompany limited by guarantee under the Corporations Act2001.We have for many years spoken aboutthe challenges facing the sport and theAssociation, and I believe that throughthe achievements of the past twelvemonths, the Association with thesupport of the members and clubs willbe in a strong position to overcomeany challenges that the future holds.I sincerely thank the Executive, StateCouncillors, Zone and District officialsBowls NSW, 2011-12 Annual Report & Year Book Page 4
