The undoubtedhighlight was the effort of the Belrose No 1 Pennant Side inmaking the State final and being narrowly defeated. OurSeniors won the Combined Metropolitan Zones Senior SidesChampionship for the second consecutive year, this timebeing undefeated and we won the Round Robin Inter-ZoneChallenge against Zones 2, 4 and 16 for the first time since itsinception in 1999.Our total membership fell by 63, over 100 fewer than lastyear but we retained all clubs. The continued efforts to recruitnew bowlers by many clubs involving large numbers ofbowlers had at least some small reward. The Zone’s specialtask force of both men and women to work solely onrecruitment and retention has continued its great work with ahuge programme organised for early next year. It wastherefore pleasing that of our 36 clubs, 33 entered a total of103 Pennants sides and 27 clubs, 68 Midweek Triples sides.The introduction of both Seniors and Reserve Zone Triples andFours championships also proved very popular. A number ofZone bowlers were selected in the representative sides.Vigorous debate took place throughout the year to contributethe Zone’s views on the new Constitution of Bowls NSW.Inter-Zone EventsIn our annual matches, Zone 9 defeated Zone 10 in the AllanBuckley Shield local derby, as well as Zones 11 and 12.However, in the State Inter-Zone Sides Championship, Zone 9lost its section on a count-back after winning our first twomatches.In the State Seniors Inter-Zone Sides Championship, Zone 9failed to reach the semi-final stage on a count-back. It was indeed pleasing to witness the performanceof many juniors in the recent Zone 10 Pennants, whoseprowess has seen them selected in Grades 1 to 5 atMerrylands, Toongabbie and The Hills, all very strong clubswith great depth.The Junior Championships for 2011 were recently completedat Rydalmere Central BC. The closeness in scores in manymatches was clear evidence of the high standards evidentthroughout the Championships. It was wonderful to seeMichael O’Loughlin win the State Junior SinglesChampionship. The Zone Juniors also won the MetropolitanShield.Bowls NSW, 2011-12 Annual Report & Year Book Page 34

StJohns Park won Grade 1 with a 3-shot victory over Belrose.Greenacre won the Grade 5 flag while Mounties weresuccessful in Grade 6. Lidcombe were runners-up in Grade 4.Cabramatta won the National Premier League title.The Zone 12 Junior sides had a resurgent year winning the 7-A-Side Championships held at Foster. Chris Mathers, BenGlasson, Daniel Farrell and Beau Prideaux were runners-up inthe State Junior Fours with Beau capping a stellar year for theJuniors with selection in the NSW side.Ben Twist (St Johns Park) won the 2011 Junior World CupSingles title, Michael Clarke and David Holt (Cabramatta) theState Pairs and Michael Clarke and Peter Bellis (Cabramatta)the Champion of Champion Pairs.
