A highly respected mentor,Jack has been involved in coaching at club, Zone and Statelevel for a number of years. Jack’s fifth year as NSW StateJunior Coach has witnessed the NSW Under-18 State sideenjoy unprecedented success. In 2011 the NSW U-18s wonthe annual Quadrangular Series against Victoria, WesternAustralia and South Australia then went on to win the seriesagainst the ACT and Queensland. At the Australian JuniorChampionships the NSW Boys’ side dominated in all fourdisciplines, taking out the title by a record margin. The NSWGirls also finished as second best performed, giving NSW theoverall best performed state.2011 Outstanding Senior Club Personality of the YearThis award recognises those older members who havecontributed in a significant way to the welfare of their cluband members over a period of time. One such quiet achieveris this year’s recipient, Reg Richardson (Ettalong Memorial)who has given service as greens director, chair of Pennantselection plus service on a range of committees – building,CDSE, match, finance and disciplinary together with a record20 years as officer in charge of barbeques. His volunteerworks reaches out beyond the club into the community wherehe instituted the Peninsula Charity Organisation raising fundsfor the local disadvantaged. Reg was honoured for hisextraordinary 25 years of volunteering with life membershipof the club.Our Impeccable Annalists -2011 Media AwardThe 2011 Best Media Coverage of Lawn Bowls in NSW waswon by Lauren Wright, a sports reporter with the SouthernHighland News for consistent and in-depth coverage of oursport. Lauren was accompanied by Roy Truscott, aphotographer for the Southern Highland News, whose photosoften encapsulated moments from the games Laurenreported. MC John Mangos predicted we would hear more ofLauren’s talents.A Noteworthy Postscript –Aron Sherriff went on to be named International Bowlerof the Year at the Bowls Australia 2012 Awards Night.Aron was also recipient of Bowls Australia’s MaleBowler of the Year and Natasha van Eldik FemaleBowler of the Year, Sean Mawdsley U-18 Bowler of theYear and Jack Hawkins Coach of the Year. All havegiven the best of themselves and are worthy of thehonours. Awesome, guys!NSW Sports Federation Awards2012 NSW Sports Federation AwardsBowls NSW was a finalist in two categories of the 2012 NSWSports Federation Annual Awards - Organisation of the Yearand Event of the Year.The Event of the Year nomination relates to the InauguralIndigenous Tour of December 2010. Matches on the tourwere played against the NSW State Country Tour Side as partof the annual Development Series. The tour showcased eliteindigenous bowlers and reached out to the Indigenouscommunity, highlighting the elite bowlers as role models.Matches were played at Orange, Dubbo and Walgett andengaged the local community at each venue.The achievements of Bowls NSW during 2011 were recognisedwith a nomination as Organisation of the Year. Over the last12 months the Association has made constitutional andorganisational change with a view to improving thegovernance of bowls in NSW and assuring the future of theAssociation. It was also a highly successful year with the NSWKeno Hi-Jackers winning every series played as well asscooping the Australian Sides Championship. The NSW U-18side also enjoyed a stellar year. They made a clean sweep oftheir series as well as an unprecedented domination of theAustralian Junior Championships. The NSW Boys took gold inall four disciplines (singles, pairs, triples and fours) andclaimed the overall state trophy by a record margin. BowlsNSW also conducted the Inaugural Indigenous Tour andconducted events for bowlers with disability,including the Inclusion Cup.To be recognised as a finalist in the twocategories is a great honour for Bowls NSW.Cycling took the honours in Event of the Year, while NetballNSW pipped the field to claim Organisation of the Year.The NSW Sports Federation represents NSW sportingorganisations and provides advocacy, education, recognitionand support for the sports industry in NSW.Bowls NSW, 2011-12 Annual Report & Year Book Page 28
Zone ReportsIn the following reports results sections, CoC refers to Champion of Club Champions events and SPR refers to State President’sReserve Championship eventsZone 1President: Charles NelsonSecretary: Ron WoodwardState Councillor: Wilf ClarkZone 1 gained a new member club with the Kingscliff BCtransferring its affiliation from the Gold Coast Tweed District,Queensland to our Tweed Byron District increasing thenumber of members in the Zone by 199 members. Baus beat Australian International SteveGlasson (St. Johns Park) 31-28 in a high quality final played atLithgow City BC. Burgess downed Greg Collin (Dubbo Railway)31-25 in the final played at Port Macquarie City BC to recordhis biggest success on the bowling green and Elliott accountedfor Allan Taylor (Belrose) 17-8 in the final of the RookiesSingles played at Raymond Terrace BC. It is also pleasing toreport that Nelson Bay BC hosted the Australian SidesChampionship (Alley Shield) and Soldiers Point BC the StateChampionships.A feature of the Pennant season was the performance of themembers of the Nelson Bay No 1 Grade Pennant side thatcreated history by winning the club’s inaugural No 1 GradePennant flag. The previous highest success for the club thatwas formed in 1953, and affiliated with Zone 2 in 1954, was inNo 2 Grade in 1963-64 and 2009. Raymond Terrace made itback to back No 2 Grade titles, which earnt them automaticelevation to No 1 Grade meaning that in 2012 RaymondTerrace would have two sides in No 1 Grade. Hamilton Northwon its first No 3 Grade Pennant flag, Swansea claimed itssecond No 4 Grade title in seven years, Water Board won itsfirst No 5 Grade flag since 1980 and Redhead created a uniquebit of history when they became the first club to win the Nos 6and 7 Grade titles in the same year. Raymond Terrace won itsthird successive No 1 Grade Mid-Week flag, Cardiff claimed itsfirst No 2 Grade flag since 1980, Raymond Terrace No 3 Grademade it the No 1 Grade / No 3 Grade Mid-Week double,Carrington won its inaugural No 4 Grade Mid-Week flag andRedhead completed an excellent lower grade Pennant seasonfor the club when they claimed their first No 5 Grade Mid-Week Pennant flag.The 12-day 51st Annual Mattara Carnival catered for 1,052entries, with the Mattara Badge retaining the design used forthe 50th Anniversary Carnival. Heaton-Birmingham GardensBC hosted its first Les Parrott Memorial Open Singles and theRestricted Singles, while Kahibah BC hosted the TraditionalCarnival. Matthew Baus (Swansea) won his inaugural LesParrott Memorial Open Singles defeating 2000 and 2003titleholder, Tony Miller (North Haven) 25-17 in a keenlycontested final.
