Baus beat Australian International SteveGlasson (St. Johns Park) 31-28 in a high quality final played atLithgow City BC. Burgess downed Greg Collin (Dubbo Railway)31-25 in the final played at Port Macquarie City BC to recordhis biggest success on the bowling green and Elliott accountedfor Allan Taylor (Belrose) 17-8 in the final of the RookiesSingles played at Raymond Terrace BC. It is also pleasing toreport that Nelson Bay BC hosted the Australian SidesChampionship (Alley Shield) and Soldiers Point BC the StateChampionships.A feature of the Pennant season was the performance of themembers of the Nelson Bay No 1 Grade Pennant side thatcreated history by winning the club’s inaugural No 1 GradePennant flag. The previous highest success for the club thatwas formed in 1953, and affiliated with Zone 2 in 1954, was inNo 2 Grade in 1963-64 and 2009. Raymond Terrace made itback to back No 2 Grade titles, which earnt them automaticelevation to No 1 Grade meaning that in <strong>2012</strong> RaymondTerrace would have two sides in No 1 Grade. Hamilton Northwon its first No 3 Grade Pennant flag, Swansea claimed itssecond No 4 Grade title in seven years, Water Board won itsfirst No 5 Grade flag since 1980 and Redhead created a uniquebit of history when they became the first club to win the Nos 6and 7 Grade titles in the same year. Raymond Terrace won itsthird successive No 1 Grade Mid-Week flag, Cardiff claimed itsfirst No 2 Grade flag since 1980, Raymond Terrace No 3 Grademade it the No 1 Grade / No 3 Grade Mid-Week double,Carrington won its inaugural No 4 Grade Mid-Week flag andRedhead completed an excellent lower grade Pennant seasonfor the club when they claimed their first No 5 Grade Mid-Week Pennant flag.The 12-day 51st Annual Mattara Carnival catered for 1,052entries, with the Mattara Badge retaining the design used forthe 50th Anniversary Carnival. Heaton-Birmingham GardensBC hosted its first Les Parrott Memorial Open Singles and theRestricted Singles, while Kahibah BC hosted the TraditionalCarnival. Matthew Baus (Swansea) won his inaugural LesParrott Memorial Open Singles defeating 2000 and 2003titleholder, Tony Miller (North Haven) 25-17 in a keenlycontested final. Russell Paterson won Wangi’s second MattaraRestricted Singles title in 3 years, when he edged out Geoff<strong>Bowls</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>, 2011-12 Annual Report & Year Book Page 29
