CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENTFACILITIES IN FREE STATE, LIMPOPO, MPUMALANGA, NORTHWEST AND NORTHERN CAPETreatment services research has shown that the organisational features of treatmentfacilities impact on the types of services available and the quality of services provided toclients (Lee et al., 2001). The following section describes a number of organisationalfeatures including intensity of treatment provided, ownership status, and facilityaffiliation.3.1.1. Treatment facility profile by intensity of careCore findings:• 37.5% of facilities in Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West andNorthern Cape provide primarily inpatient treatment services• 87.5% of facilities in Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West andNorthern Cape offer mainly outpatient treatment servicesSubstance abuse treatment facilities in South Africa provide services at different levels ofintensity. These include inpatient / residential treatment and outpatient programmes.There are no inpatient programmes in Northern Cape and Limpopo (Figure 1). Overall,the majority of facilities in the various provinces provide outpatient services (Figure 2).26
