PROFILE OF SERVICES PROVIDED BY SUBSTANCE ABUSETREATMENT FACILITIESThis section describes the types of treatment services provided by facilities in Free State,Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and Northern Cape. We focus on both treatmentservices proper and ancillary health and welfare services. Ancillary services are thoseservices directed towards problems that are associated with substance dependence (e.g.psychological dysfunction), whereas treatment services proper focuses on eliminating orreducing the substance use disorder.42
Core findings:• Compared to the provision of core addiction services, a smaller proportion of facilities provide ancillary mentalhealth or medical services• Just over half of the facilities conduct psychological evaluations and less than 15.0% conduct psychiatricassessments of clients• A small proportion of facilities offer mental health-related counselling services• Almost all facilities offer family therapy and family education services• A quarter of facilities routinely test clients for hepatitis and other infectious diseases or conduct harm-reductioninterventions targeting injection drug users3.6.1. Profile of treatment services offeredAll facilities (100.0%) offer some form of addiction counselling service, with a smallerpercentage (68.8%) offering some type of post-treatment aftercare service (Figure 13). Incontrast, only half of the facilities (50.0%) provide detoxification services. Only 1facility (6.3%) provides psychiatric services.By province, 3 (42.9%) facilities in Free State, 1 (50.0%) in Limpopo, 2 (66.7%) inMpumalanga and 2 (100.0%) in North West provide detoxification services. The onlyfacility providing psychiatric services is located in the Free State. Aftercare services areavailable at 5 (71.4%) facilities in the Free State, 1 (50.0%) facility in Limpopo, 2(66.7%) in Mpumalanga, 2 (100.0%) in North West and 1 (50.0%) in Northern Cape.Figure 13.
