2A13, 4, 5Anionic GuestHostBHost-GuestCFigure 6.913 C CP MAS NMR spectra for (A) sodium 2,4,6-trihydroxyoxybenzoate, (B) Si-GPS-[Cd(Trac)](ClO 4 ) 2 and (C) Si-GPS-[Cd(Trac)(2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoate)](ClO 4 ). Allspectra are shown with line broadening. These spectra are indicative of inclusion of the guest species in Si-GPS-[Cd(Trac)](ClO 4 ) 2 , 94, and confirm the UV-Vis analytical uptake measurement.Host-guest inclusion complexes formed with Si-GPS-[Cd(Trac)](ClO 4 ) 2 , 94, thathad percent inclusion values lower than 50% do not display any visible evidence ofhost-guest complex formation in solid state NMR spectra. It appears that theconcentration of the guest species relative to the host material is too low for the solidstate NMR method to detect it once uptake diminishes below this level. Also, inclusion spectra for some guest species, such as p-nitrophenolate (73%), with highpercent inclusion, did not display discernible resonances as they were masked by thehost signals. Further sets of 13 C CPMAS spectra for high guest uptake host-guestcombinations are provided in Appendix C.6.2 The model receptor complex revisited: Determination ofbinding constants in the presence of waterTo confirm the proposition that the presence of water in the system wouldenhance the binding strength of hydroxybenzoate guests with ortho, and to a lesser117
