NRI Annual Research Report 2001-2002Project Title:Research in Designing Sludge Recirculation Clarifiers of ThermalPower Plants & Simulation of Selected Existing ClarifiersDepartment: Environment ProtectionContractor: Niroo Research InstituteProject Staff: M. Jalali - A. MostafaeiProject Manager: S. DavariProject Code: PEVPT01Summary:Softener clarifiers play an important role in water pre-treatment facilities of thermalpower plants . They reduce hardness and alkalinity of water as well as suspended solids, the impurities which cause problems in boilers , heat exchangers , condenser tubes andwater pipelines . Improper design of clarifiers , beside consuming more chemicals ,results in producing water with undesirable quality which in turn increases ionic load ofdemin water system and decreases No. of concentration cycles in wet cooling towers .The purpose of the project is to obtain a software for optimum design of new clarifiersand simulation of existing clarifiers in order to optimize their operation. The project activities consists of the following:1- Obtaining technical knowledge, Principle equations & relations and controllingparameters of sludge recirculating clarifiers in order to design new clarifiers andsimulate the existing ones.2- Designing a SCSRC clarifier pilot plant in order to process simulation indifferent zones (Rapid mixing , Flocculation and Settling )3- Accomplishing pilot tests in order to obtain design parameters (residence timeand velocity gradient in a.m. areas and their effect on settling velocity and solidloading).4- Solving basic equations using numerical approach.5- Developing design software.43
