GeramianSummary:The experience gained from the recent two decades has proved that factors like notpaying the proper attention to the design, manufacturing and environmental conditionsare the major causes for severe damages on concrete poles. Most contractors do notconsider the role of environmental conditions on concrete poles. As a result, in manycorrosive areas of Iran concrete poles are subjected to the premature degradation.Reliability of concrete and reinforced concrete structures not only makes precision indesign and force analysis but also causes a subtlety in their long-term durability.Investigation on corrosion behavior and protection of reinforced concrete poles incorrosive areas of Iran was our objective in carrying out this project.Project Results:According to statistics regarding premature degradation of reinforcedconcrete poles used for high voltage distribution and transmission lines, the needfor protection and lifetime enhancement can be felt very much. The results of fieldtests performed on soil, water and concrete poles have been presented in this report.Various methods of protection including corrosion inhibitor, galvanizedreinforcement, application of coating on the concrete and use of reinforcementcoated with epoxy resin were investigated. The following laboratory tests werecarried out on the samples and the results were compared:−−−−Polarization test according to ASTM G5 standardChloride resistance measurement according to ASTM G109 standardSulfate resistance measurement according to ASTM C1012 standardBonding test according to ASTM C234 standardThe use of “Corrosion Inhibitor” during the mixing process of concrete wasshown to be the most effective method for corrosion prevention in most ofcorrosive areas of Iran.68
