COOK,ASSISTANT GEOLOGIST.J_s_ :DEAR SIR :--In pursuance Of my duty as .Assistant Geologist,charged with the survey of the southern part of the Stateof :New Jersey, I respectfully submit the accompanying Re_port.The instructions received were to .make a geological surveyof the eastern half of Moumouth County, ahd report uponthe same at the close of thepresent year• In acaordance withthese, the survey has been prosecuted either in the field or in'the laboratory from July twenty-seventh to the present time.It has not yet been brought to a conclusion, but is in such conditionthat it can be completed at an early day.At the commencement of a survey of this kind, many ofthe examinations must be of a general character, and _uch ashave a bearing upon all the work which is to follow. Forthis reason, while the main part of my examinations have'been'made in the eastern part of the county, I have made oneexcursion to its western part, and another" entirely.across theState, and down to Salem.
