84',WAYWAYANDAMINH.This mine is situated on the Wawayanda Mountain, half amile from the New York State line, and two and a half milesnortheast of the Wawayanda :Lake. The prevailing char_/cterof the rock, in which the ore occursi is gneiss.. It is exceedinglyvariable in composition and texture. Mica enters butslightly into any of the rocks throughout the whole mountain, and in many places it is entirely absent When en,irely absent_hornblende_ or magnetic iron ore, in grains, takes itsplace, forming a syenitie gneiss. The rock in some places iscomposed only of feldspar and quartz_ the former being itsprincipal ingredient.• Four deposits of ore havt_been opened and _vorked. Theirprevailing course is northeast aud southwest_ and their dipfrom twenty to forty degrees to the southeast..Commencing at the southeasterly deposit, and taking themin their numerical order, we find that the flint is not'worked •at the present time, and has not been for several years, becausethe Qre is more accessible and more abundant ia the otherdeposits. On account of the water in the shaft, and the dilapidatedcondition of its timbering_ I was unable to make a per-.sonal examination_ but I was, however, informed by the miningcaptain, that it has been worked to the depth of one hundred',• and ten feet, and c_te hundred on the deposit ; and that, theore is from twelve to fourteen feet in width, at the bottom of'the shah.• The Second deposit occurs fifty feet northwest, "of the first. It has been worked to the depth of eighty feet, and one hundredfeet on the deposit ; and at its pr_entin width.del_th is thirty feetThe third deposit is seventy-five feet from the second. Here the ore occurs in the form of a bed, or irregular deposit_varying from two to twelve fe_t, iu width. __t its presentdepth, one extremity of the workings shows the ore six feet inwidth_ and the other two feet.NEW JERSEY GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
