The geographical position<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State, its varied physical aspect, geological forma.tions' and soils, demand that every acre <strong>of</strong> its territory shouldba thoroughly examined. There was a time, in <strong>the</strong> infancy<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> science <strong>of</strong> gedlogy, when general investigations weredeemed sufficient to answer all practical purposes. That tim_has passed away ; economical geology has become an accuratescience, and in order that <strong>the</strong> moat beneficial results may beattained from its investigations, it must be pursued in an accuratemanner.SEQUEL TO NORTHERN DIVISION.I have devoted <strong>the</strong> greater part <strong>of</strong> my time_ from <strong>the</strong> middle<strong>of</strong> July to <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> December, to gdolo_cal examina_tions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State.
