to <strong>the</strong> Delaware River/a little below Trenton following <strong>the</strong>sou<strong>the</strong>astern border <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> red shales and sandstones whichstretch across <strong>the</strong> central pa_ <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State. This line hasbeen selected on account <strong>of</strong> its being a natural division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>i_State into two nearly equal parts, in mspcet to area_ while inrespect to <strong>the</strong>ir physical, geological and agricultural features_<strong>the</strong>y are entirely different. The adoption <strong>of</strong> this division_will, in <strong>the</strong> fi,u!tl report, be <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong> avoiding unnecessary'?repetition,SOUTHERNDIVISION.The sou<strong>the</strong>rn division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State has been assigned toPr<strong>of</strong>essor George H. Cook_ assistant geologist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> survey.He enteredupon hisdutiesin Monmouth County ou th_27th.<strong>of</strong> July last, and from that time to <strong>the</strong> present hasbeen engagedci<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> field or in <strong>the</strong> laboratory. His attentionhas been chiefly directed to <strong>the</strong> marl beds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greensand iformation ; and a perusal <strong>of</strong> his report will satisfy all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>great importance <strong>of</strong> a more minute examination than hashi<strong>the</strong>rto been made. Allow me to call your attention especially_iothat part <strong>of</strong> his report which refers to <strong>the</strong> followingfacts_ proved from examinations in <strong>the</strong> field:1. "The clays and marls which constitute <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong>most <strong>of</strong> thispart<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Statearein regularand continuouslayers."2.
