It almost always occurs mixed with foreign substances,as lime, alumina, sillc% &c., which give to it a varietyof forms, and from which its name is derived. Its prevailingcolors are various shades of brown and'yellow ; and its streakand powder areyellow brown. The variety called bog oresometimes contains phosphorus, and yields a cold short iron, unfit for those purposes which require a tough tenacious metal, but admirably adapted for c_ting. This ore, in its variousforms, occurs in beds associated with rocks of all ages. Inthis district the greatest deposits are found among the metamorphicrocks of the Wallkill Valley. Bog oi'e occurs, notunfrequently, in the Blue Mountains; and in the valley of theDelaware, but not in sufficient quantities to be of much practicalimportance.'On the farm of Chandler Wood, half a'milo southwest ofthe New Turnpike, on the Blue Mountain, is a bed of this oreapparently of considerable extent.
