'Rcconuoissanees were to be made, instruments, apparatus,anc}'chemicals to be provided and transported, and a varietyof preliminary arrangements req.ulred, as may readily be expectedat the opening of a work of this kind. It was evident"that to commence the survey oa this plan, in all the dcpartments_not only .a rigid economy must be observed, but thatthe greater pa_"t of the necessary instruments must be obtainedothe_'w!sethan by purchase. With this' view_ letters wereaddressed to Prof. Baehe, superintendent of the'Unlted StatesCoast Survey_ laying before him the embarrassing circumstancesunder which we labored, and soliciting the loan of certaininstruments. Prof. Bache, convinced of the great importanceof the undertaking, responded unhcsltetingly to our soil-_citations, and forwarded all that we needed ; tt_e acknowledgmentof_vhieh, together with tt_e acknowledgment of the receiptof instruments from the New Jersey Frank!inite Compahy,will be found in the accompanying report of the topographicalengineer.
