The marl containing the largest amount of"phosphateof lime, is the first layer of the third bed ; the greenmarl of Squanl_Im, ])eal, Shark River and Poplar. It is notedfor quick and powerful action when applied in light dressings;from five to twenty loads on an acre produce good effects, andit is sometimes used in even smaller quantities, t'_o. 3 ofthe first bed kswell known as an excellent marl. From onehundred to two hundred loads are commonly applied to anacre, and such dressings, last fifteen or twenty years. It willbe observed that thi_ layer contains less phosphate, but muchmore carbonate of lime than the one just mentioned; andprobably this ksthe cause of its more permanent action. Thefirst layer of the second bed seems, from the analysis, to bemuch better than practice has found it. The difference maybe owing to the coarseness and cleanness of its grains, for whenmixed with quicklime and appficd to the soil, it produces cx-NEW JERSEY GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
