.RERORT.GENERALREMARKS.That part <strong>of</strong> New 5ersey which, in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Geological</strong> <strong>Survey</strong>,is assigned to <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn division, includes all that portion<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State lying south <strong>of</strong> a line:drawn from Staten IslandSound, near Elizabetllport, to <strong>the</strong> Delaware River, a little belowTrenton. The line follows <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>astern border <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>red shalesand sandstones which 'stretch across <strong>the</strong> central part0f<strong>the</strong> State. Its general direction is straight, and its bearing'•a little west <strong>of</strong> southwest. The extreme length <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> districtis 0ne hundred and ten miles; and its greatest breadth aboutseventy-five miles. Its area is estimated at not far from threethousand four hundred square miles.In it._physical geography, it is remarkable for its lack <strong>of</strong>hills, its sandy soil, its extensive pine woods, and for <strong>the</strong> almostentire absence <strong>of</strong> rocks.The Nevislnk Hills are three hundred and ten feet high, _and a chain <strong>of</strong> hills <strong>of</strong> a somewhat less elevation extends from<strong>the</strong>m in a westerly direction to Freehold. South <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong>country seldom rises more than sixty feet above <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>sea..A belt <strong>of</strong> clayey or loamy soil, several miles in width, extendsacross <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn border <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> district, and down <strong>the</strong>Delaware River to <strong>the</strong> bay; and streaks <strong>of</strong> clayey soil aregenerally found on one or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> streamsSee Gordon% Gazeteer, p. 1.NEW JERSEY GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
